My kid is running out of birthdays [1]

The kid made it to 14 today.
I suspect at best there’s 2 more.
Climate change is gonna wipe us all out.
We are daily watching extreme weather ramp up and beyond what any of us thought we’d see in our lifetime. and as soon as it pops on the screen we deny it.
I do a lot of garden building and have a daily chore of watering — sometimes at many sites.
About … 8 years ago I got frustrated that the weather on the news wasn’t matching temps I was seeing at my house and went out to get a better thermometer, and then another, and another as the years have passed. I have recorded 118+ temps for days on end (4 days) 6years ago — that was a peak temp but it scared the shit out of me and got me involved in tree planting.
Then I had a 3 year stint of sundays working outside for a spiritual center, they moved around and cheaper space on sunday meant rougher neighborhoods — so someone needed to be outside. There I was watching winters warm, falls heat up and summers getting more out of control. Watching the winters get warmer really messed me up — i started to think about how much the temps were increasing and thinking about where things were headed……. I realized when my kid was 10 going on 11 that it was very possible that humans were only going to have about 5 more years of livable temps left.
So today — my 14 yr old really only has about 2 years left. I fucking kills me that I brought a kid into this. I never tell them what I know is about to happen and try to help them find meaningful fulfillment in this life. We make plans for a future that will never be.
i can laugh when I see how fucked we are politically, because it’s all over and of course we can’t have a nice planet — we’re humans.
But birthdays fuck me up. None of us can stop what is in motion — we can do all we can to lessen the blow and have some comfort at the end — but you are lying to yourself if you think humanity is gonna be here in 10 years — you are hoping against hope that you will be here in 5. In all likelihood none of us reading on kos today will be here in 2.
