On Saturday morning, the Houston Police Department received a call from a person who witnessed a man waving a gun at an Exxon fuel station in the Acres Homes area of north Houston. When police officers came, they saw an armed man, later to be identified as Nathan Bryan Miller; Miller complied with officers and admitted to shooting some people. Authorities have said that Miller was “mentally impaired” on the day of the shooting.

Asst. Chief Ernest Garcia with the Houston PD said the man began making statements, "as to the effect of I've just shot some people. I've killed some persons, and I've killed them down the road." Investigators were then led to what was described as a "vacant lot" with lots of trees and vegetation. There, officers encountered shipping containers and some furniture. "Which would appear to us that maybe a homeless encampment had been settled in the back," Asst. Chief Garcia said.

As officers visited a nearby homeless encampment, a wooded area which included a few shipping containers, they found three people that were shot, two of whom have succumbed to their wounds. The two that were murdered included a cousin of Miller and a visitor to the encampment. The third one was taken to hospital in serious condition, though later found to be in stable condition.

Though Nathan Bryan Miller did not appear in court today, magistrate Eva Flores, who temporarily denied bond for the defendant, revealed that Miller “freely admitted” that he committed the shooting because “they were allegedly performing witchcraft”. Miller would have to undergo a mental evaluation and make an appearance in court on Tuesday.

Although a few incidents of murder over allegations of witchcraft have occurred, they aren’t as uncommon as one would believe. Such incidents include the notorious murder of Charles Walton in 1945 and a publicised 2012 murder of a London teenage boy who was believed, by two people, to be a witch.
