We have a lot of work to do
I read President Biden’s speech. Wow! (I’m hard of hearing so it was easier to read than follow closed captions, which aren’t always correct.) Fair warning: this will meander a bit.
Let me backtrack for a moment. In March 2020, we went grocery shopping. It was the last time for over a year. I had asked for help from a young man, an employee, and we got to talking about covid. He didn’t think it would amount to much. I said that we (meaning our location) lived too close to the airport for it not to spread. I had no idea how right I was. (I’ve often wondered if he made it through the pandemic.)
I see a wildfire, covid, and a derelict skyscraper like Republicans. (What the Hell is she talking about?!) The violence and hate that the Republicans stoke can only last so long. Hate is not only self-destructive, it’s also exhausting! When we hit herd immunity, when enough people come to their senses to try to mitigate and eliminate a disease that can wipe out humanity, covid will go. Wildfires last only as long as there’s matter to burn and sufficient oxygen to stoke it. A derelict skyscraper can stand for years as long as it’s got a solid foundation and good support beams. It may fall apart little by little, but it will stand for a long time.
Republicans … President Biden drew the fire break around the extremist Republicans. The Supreme Court and abortion rights are waking up voters, and more people are realizing the extent this party relies on hate. Awareness and realization bring herd immunity. And they have no agenda, no solid base, and nothing to support them.
Is this going to happen now, immediately? No. What I see is that it may take until 2030 for the last of this idiocy to implode the rotten skyscraper, for it to run out of steam and enough people to feed it, and for enough people to realize that hate won’t save our future. It’s going to be a long, slow climb, just like Captain Kirk up Half Dome. But we won’t have Spock to catch us if we fall. Just our own good sense and our community, working together is what will be our safety net.
Whether we can wake up enough to save our climate and ourselves, I don’t know. It’s humanity we’re trying to save. Not just Republicans or Democrats, religious persons or atheists or deists, it’s everyone. The educated among us will be able to see alternatives. They won’t. Obsession, fixation, will do them no favors. Making sure their children aren’t equipped for the realities of life by banning books, narrowing history, and forbidding them to opportunity to think through problems will only increase their poverty. Then their hoarse screaming will do them no favors. And when Republicans scream and shout, they have the Right to do so as long as they don’t Harm anyone!
I am, as you’ve probably guessed, a huge Star Trek fan. I’ve drawn inspiration from more than one episode. And i love Independence Day and The American President movies. Especially the speeches given by the presidents. To me, it doesn’t matter where you draw inspiration from. “We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore.” So true.
I sit in our apartment, and I see the small grove of trees outside our balcony door. I smile. Every time. And I read about the towns that have no drinkable water because of droughts. Flint, Michigan isn’t that far from me. I get a huge knot in my stomach, and wonder where will those people go? Will they even survive? I have no answers. And that bothers me.
President Biden is taking a stand, drawing a line, and doing what he can. I’ve been privileged to live long enough to see at least three great Presidents: John Kennedy, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. Each, in their own way, has asked us to step up to the plate. We have a lot of work to do.
And don’t let Any One tell you that you’re not doing enough! We all do what we can do. If it only consists of recommending articles and tipping authors, if that’s all you can do, it’s better than nothing at all. Do what you can! Do what you can afford to do! Not just financially, but physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It took a Long time, over 60 years, for me to come to the realization that I’m good just as I am. I was finally able to tell myself, “I love you.” And as a best friend of mine once said, “I have to live my life so that I can look at myself in the mirror each morning.” When we all contribute, it’s like throwing a pebble in a pond. The ripples spread. Kindness, compassion, empathy, sensitivity, and tenderness spread like the ripples in a pond. That’s the future that I want for my children and grandchildren. That’s why I’m here. Thank you for allowing me to join. Blessed be.
