A Traditional Crafts Fair

In Rožnov that day there was a crafts fair featuring local blacksmiths and their work

Of course there was lots more to see, like this display of steam engines

There were about 20 individual spots for blacksmiths to demonstrate their craft

These beefy lads gave this youngster his first lesson in smithing black iron.

These horses got a new shoe every hour or so during the day.

A pond on the grounds had an adorable warning sign. The line of English text reads, “Only on your own danger!”

Inside the buildings there were plenty of things to admire— like these water powered machines for carding wool.

A beautiful old loom

Inside the church

A woodcarver’s work, subtitled: Chainsaw Envy

Or try your hand at cutting logs the old-fashioned way.

One building housed a gallery of blacksmithing art

I think the Red Baron’s triplane deserves a closer look

A pretty soggy day. It did make it easier to take pictures with the crowds hiding in the food tents.

I had a great time at the fair despite the rain. I spent a bit of time talking to some of the people displaying their skills and their wares, a nice man who builds tiled stoves and one of the potters particularly come to mind.

Rožnov itself is a beautiful little city.

That evening, the real reason for our trip to Rožnov—

Our friend Pavel was having an exhibit opening.

There’s Pavel tugging at his ear in embarrassment with fuzzy Finn at his feet while the owner of the gallery talks glowingly of Pavel’s works.

Pavel Piekar primarily produces linocuts. He has dozens of pieces dedicated to his favorite thinkers and artists. Much of this exhibit were pieces with a summer theme and many were from his recent trip to the Greek island of Korfu.

I like most of Pavel’s work, he’s a remarkable and driven artist. I did eventually wander out into the garden where I discovered this piece by another artist that combined metal and blown glass.

Thanks for stopping by.

This is an open thread.
