Until the last few months, Republicans were fairly confident that, not only would they win the House, they would also take the Senate. Yet, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v Wade, Donald Trump’s investigation by the FBI, and a wave of legislative successes by Democrats, the midterms are beginning to tighten. Recently, Mary Peltola became the first Alaskan Native elected to Congress, when she defeated 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin.

Peltola’s electoral victory in a special congressional election was unexpected. She fought for a seat that has been held by Republicans for almost five decades. The previous holder died in office, and so, the seat will be contested again this November. Palin, 58, is a kind of trial run for Trumpism. She rose as part of a wave of Tea Party Republicans determined to overthrow the establishment, but, like Trump, proved to know very little about actual policy. That didn’t prevent her from becoming a Republican icon. Peltota, 49, defeated her by 3%, campaigning for access to abortion facilities, for action on climate change, and for greater protections for the state’s salmon population. Palin outspent Peltola four to one and still lost.

Trump and the Republicans have been a huge help for Democrats: they have shown their true colours, their contempt for women’s rights, democratic institutions, and law enforcement. Every day, Americans are reminded of just how bad and chaotic the Trump era was. Google search traffic for Trump matches that of Biden! If that was a good thing, Republicans would be doing well. Yet, that rise in interest in what’s going on in Trumpworld, has coincided with a decline in support for Republicans. Biden’s approval ratings, aty 37.5% in July, are now at 42.7% and rising. If there were doubts, if people had started to waver and think that Republicans have changed, this year has reminded millions of Americans that a vote for Republicans is a vote for the Stone Age.
