Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!

Here’s a little of what President Biden said last night:

But as I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise. So tonight, I have come this place where it all began to speak as plainly as I can to the nation about the threats we face, about the power we have in our own hands to meet these threats, and about the incredible future that lies in front of us if only we choose it. ✂️ But first, we must be honest with each other and with ourselves. Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic. Now, I want to be very clear — (applause) — very clear up front: Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology. I know because I’ve been able to work with these mainstream Republicans. But there is no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans, and that is a threat to this country.

Pundits are debating whether this should have been considered political or not. Let’s not worry about that. Yes, it’s political. Yes, it’s a call to the entire country. Because the MAGA Rs are an existential threat.

Here we prefer to talk about the good things such as hope and light. But it is true that fear or the threat of having something taken away — and sheer disgust — these things are powerful motivators.

It was revulsion for Sarah Palin that helped lead, for example, to the victory of the first D, Mary Peltola, to represent Alaska in something like 50 years.

Moreover, when the Ds talk about threats, these threats are real (unlike the caravans of poor people who only get coverage in election season). The Rs have restricted abortion access. The Rs are calling to defund the FBI. The Rs are talking about destroying Social Security and Medicare. We are not making these things up.

These threats are powerful motivators. It’s time to use them, because we can make such a difference. But we need to transform our fear into a force that goads, and not a force that paralyzes. To quote Biden again, “Throughout our history, America has often made the greatest progress coming out of some of our darkest moments.”

Come in, dear gnusies, and see some of the great progress our friends and allies are making.

Regular Scheduled Programming

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:

💙 There are more of us than there are of them.

💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!

💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

Biden, Harris and their administration have been hard at work. Here are the last week’s posts at the White House briefing room.

👎 Out with the Bad, In with the Good 👍

👍 💉 Reformulated vaccines available Lena H Sun Washington Post

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Thursday that millions of eligible Americans, including those as young as 12, get an updated omicron-targeting booster shot to bolster defenses against serious illness and death during a potential fall or winter rise in covid-19 cases. ✂️ “The updated COVID-19 boosters are formulated to better protect against the most recently circulating COVID-19 variant,” Walensky said in a statement. “They can help restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination and were designed to provide broader protection against newer variants. … If you are eligible, there is no bad time to get your COVID-19 booster and I strongly encourage you to receive it.” ✂️ Doses began shipping Wednesday to pharmacies, clinics and doctor’s offices after the FDA authorized the updated shots from Moderna and from Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech. Like earlier coronavirus vaccines, the updated boosters will be free.

🚀 👍 👎 🌻 Ukrainians using decoys to lure Russian rockets John Hudson Washington Post

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine may be outgunned, but in the latest sign it is not yet outfoxed, a fleet of decoys resembling advanced U.S. rocket systems has tricked Russian forces into wasting expensive long-range cruise missiles on dummy targets, according to interviews with senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials and photographs of the replicas reviewed by The Washington Post. ✂️ The use of rocket system decoys, which has not been reported previously, is one of many asymmetrical tactics Ukraine’s armed forces have adopted to fight back against a bigger and better-equipped invading enemy. In recent weeks, Kyiv’s operatives have blown up rail and electricity lines in occupied Russian territory, detonated explosives inside Russian arms depots and assassinated suspected collaborators. The destruction of Ukrainian replicas may partly account for Russia’s unusually boastful battle damage assessments on Western artillery, particularly the U.S.-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS. “They’ve claimed to have hit more HIMARS than we have even sent,” one U.S. diplomat observed.

It appears the House is finally getting tRump’s taxes:

💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣

Jennifer Rubin has a piece on the Rs’ self-inflicted wounds Washington Post

Just two of the seven points she makes (1) Republicans reflexively rejected popular items. Voting no on the Pact Act, the Chips and Science Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, contraception access and modest gun safety — just to name a few — allowed Democrats to crow about “their” achievements and cast Republicans as obstructionists uninterested in getting results for voters back home. ✂️ (4) Republicans made the election into a Trump referendum of sorts. They attacked the FBI over its search of Mar-a-Lago for classified documents and regurgitated the former president’s mindless excuses, some of which he didn’t have the nerve to raise in court (e.g., magical “declassification” is not a real thing). The facts as alleged by the Justice Department strongly suggest he made off with documents containing some of the country’s most closely held secrets, refused to give them back when asked, misled (or allowed his attorneys to mislead) the Justice Department and concealed or moved documents around. How to make a cogent defense of all this remains a mystery to real lawyers. And the GOP is out on a limb defending indefensible conduct — again. Blake Masters is so bad, no one wants to throw money after him Isaac Stanley-Becker, Hannah Knowles, Isaac Washington Post

The article — funding R senate candidates -- talks about how Thiel funded Vance in Ohio and then stopped… and how McConnell didn’t even bother to ask for money for Masters

McConnell told Thiel over the phone last week that Vance’s race in Ohio was proving more costly for the Senate Leadership Fund than anticipated, that money was not unlimited and that there was a need for the billionaire to “come in, in a big way, in Arizona,” as a person familiar with the conversation described his words. Law, in a call with Thiel the day before his group cut back on the Arizona ads, expressed concern about Masters as a candidate and pessimism about his campaign’s viability. Both Vance, 38, and Masters, 36, are friends and former business associates of Thiel’s; Masters stepped down from roles at Thiel’s investment firm and foundation this year. The message from McConnell and Law, according to people with knowledge of their pitch, was that they should essentially split the cost, with Thiel cutting a check to their super PAC matching whatever funds they put behind Masters. Another option, these people said, was that the Thiel-funded super PAC could take over the ad reservations initially made by the McConnell-linked group. Thiel indicated to them that he was not interested in such arrangements — a posture, say people around the venture capitalist, that is informed by his approach of investing early and a belief that any more of his money would be used as a Democratic talking point; he is still hosting fundraisers for Masters in the coming weeks. ✂️ “I don’t understand the logic of spending $15 million to help Blake Masters in the primary and then [letting] him twist in the wind against one of the best funded U.S. Senate candidates in history,” said a Republican consultant tracking the Senate race, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to offer a candid assessment. He lamented what he called “unforced errors,” including Masters’s shifting stance on abortion and his suggestion during a debate that “maybe we should privatize Social Security.”

And another big donor is holding back Brad Reed Raw Story Brad Reed Raw Story Bloomberg News reports that Adelson's widow, Miriam Adelson, has been hesitant to fork over the massive sums her husband provided prior to his death in early 2021, leaving what the publication describes as a "financial hole" for the GOP. In fact, the only money Adelson has given this year has been a $5 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC dedicated to electing Republican candidates. To put this into perspective, Bloomberg notes that the Adelsons gave more than a half a billion dollars to pro-GOP super PACs in the last decade alone. I expect that Miriam Adelson doesn’t really like all the Nazi wannabes. Then there’s this: x ALERT: Texas attorney Kellye Sorelle has been arrested in January 6th federal criminal case.

💙 Democrats Deliver 💙

President Biden addressed the nation last night. Here are excerpts from his speech:

Throughout our history, America has often made the greatest progress coming out of some of our darkest moments, like you’re hearing in that bullhorn. ✂️ MAGA Republicans look at America and see carnage and darkness and despair. They spread fear and lies –- lies told for profit and power. But I see a very different America — an America with an unlimited future, an America that is about to take off. I hope you see it as well. Just look around. I believed we could lift America from the depths of COVID, so we passed the largest economic recovery package since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And today, America’s economy is faster, stronger than any other advanced nation in the world. (Applause.) We have more to go. I believed we could build a better America, so we passed the biggest infrastructure investment since President Dwight D. Eisenhower. And we’ve now embarked on a decade of rebuilding the nation’s roads, bridges, highways, ports, water systems, high-speed Internet, railroads. (Applause.) I believed we could make America safer, so we passed the most significant gun safety law since President Clinton. (Applause.) I believed we could go from being the highest cost of prescriptions in the world to making prescription drugs and healthcare more affordable, so we passed the most significant healthcare reforms since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. (Applause.) And I believed we could create — we could create a clean energy future and save the planet, so we passed the most important climate initiative ever, ever, ever.(Applause.) The cynics and the critics tell us nothing can get done, but they are wrong. There is not a single thing America cannot do — not a single thing beyond our capacity if we do it together. It’s never easy. But we’re proving that in America, no matter how long the road, progress does come. (Applause.)

We do have power. We have to use it:

x President Biden: "While the threat to American democracy is real...we are not powerless in the face of these threats...it is within our power, it is within our hands, to stop the assault on American democracy." https://t.co/QkEbc6E5E3 pic.twitter.com/JmPqf1vXu9 — MSNBC (@MSNBC) September 2, 2022

Here’s a reaction the speech:

Biden’s speech did not get enough eyes and ears. We have to take a page from the R playbook and repeat and repeat his ideas.

New Mexico creating abortion clinic near TX border Ivana Saric Axios

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) signed an executive order Wednesday setting aside $10 million to develop a new reproductive health care clinic near the state's Texas border. Why it matters: The new clinic will expand access in the state to the "full spectrum of reproductive health care" and help it prepare for a potential increase in people seeking abortions from other states that have restricted or banned access to the procedure in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. The big picture: The new clinic will be established in Doña Ana County, which borders Texas and is about 100 miles east from the state's Arizona border, per the Washington Post.

Texas drag brunch defended by armed counter protestors Christopher Kane Los Angeles Blade

ROANOKE, Tx – Fueled by months of lies teed up by far-right conspiracy mongers like Libs of TikTok’s Chaya Raichiklike and Georgia Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, what happened on Sunday in Roanoke, Texas, has by now become something of a familiar scene. Crowds were gathered outside a family friendly drag show at Anderson Distillery and Grill, close to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, some with signs accusing the establishment and its patrons of sexually abusing children, or of “grooming” them for abuse. This time, however, counter-protestors showed up, too. Armed with AR-15 style rifles, they outnumbered the anti-LGBTQ+ activists, according to Steven Monacelli, a journalist with Rolling Stone and Texas Observer, who was there to witness the heated exchanges and document some of the conflict on Twitter.

Many have mixed feelings about this, but still, it’s time to stop giving into fear.

☁️ Opinion piece — a storm is coming and could sweep away the Maga Rs Brian Karem, Salon via Raw Story

They preach civil war and destruction should they not prevail, or if Trump is denied a return to his golden throne. They say those things even as they drive their SUVs less than a mile to go grocery shopping, visit their doctors and hit the drive-through for their favorite cholesterol burger and then a convenience store for smokes and liquor. No one's going to risk a real civil war while those things are readily available — not for a period of time longer than it takes to march to the Capitol and get arrested. ✂️ In a recent month-long trip across the country I visited 15 states and cities, from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. Some were large, and some were as small as Millersburg, Missouri. Everywhere I visited, and every person I spoke with — more than 100 in 30 days — expressed exhaustion and frustration with politics. And while registered voters of both major parties blame both parties for the sorry state of affairs in this country (while failing to place the blame on themselves), every single person I spoke with said they've "had enough" of the ongoing Trump political melodrama. They want it canceled.✂️ The disgust with the lack of civility has converged with a growing anger brought about by the recent Supreme Court case reversing the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade decision. "The Catholics did that to us," one conservative Baptist told me in West Virginia. (Five of the six justices who voted to overturn Roe are conservative Catholics.) In Los Angeles, a rabbi told me, "I don't need to be preached to by other faiths about morality." A "devoutly" conservative woman I spoke with from rural Kentucky was most poignant. Her niece had an abortion because of a life-threatening condition. A "close" family member had an abortion because of an unwanted pregnancy from an abusive common-law husband she later left.

Note this is a long article so I took a little more than usual. However, the whole thing is worth reading and there’s no paywall.

newish!!! Tax-exempt organization complaint referrals. 13909. You can fill this out for the NRA and lots of other organizations. How about if some of us white folk go into some of the MAGA churches and video record what they’re saying?

Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:

ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union

Democracy Docket — founded by Marc Elias, so important in fighting the challenges after the last election.

Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.

🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.

👎 Defund the seditionists. Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

Former US President Donald Trump's social media platform has been barred from Google Play. Google says the platform violates its policies on prohibiting content like physical threats and incitement to violence. Brad Ryan paused to take in the scene before him: Mountains with perfect peaks, a lush valley and an endless expanse of untouched Alaskan wilderness. What awed him most, though, was not the Arctic tundra in front of him; it was his grandmother who was hiking through it. “Grandma Joy is a bit of a superhero,” said Brad, a D.C.-based veterinarian. “She is not your typical 92-year-old.” Their trip last August to Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska was one of many journeys Ryan has embarked on with his paternal grandmother, Joy Ryan — whom he calls “Grandma Joy.” They are on a shared mission to visit 63 U.S. National Parks together. Since they started the effort in 2015, they’ve made it to 62. “It’s beyond anything I could ever have imagined in my life,” said Joy, who lives in Duncan Falls, Ohio.

State utilities in California are preparing to launch a pilot project to cover California’s irrigation canals in solar panels. The decision was influenced by a landmark 2021 research paper, where scientists at Univ. of California Santa Cruz crunched the numbers and figured that the panels would save 63.5 billion gallons of water from evaporation annually by shading the flowing water. Turlock Irrigation District Water & Power is preparing two pilot canal projects: a 500-foot (152-meter) curved canal section near the town of Hickman, and a second mile-long (1.6-km long) straightaway in nearby Ceres.

In Los Angeles, California, where temperatures tend to stay warm year-round, you can feel a significant difference in heat when you’re along the coast or outside the city versus when you’re in denser parts of the city. This phenomenon, known as the urban heat island effect, can make daytime temperatures in densely packed areas 1°F to 7°F warmer than nearby areas. Los Angeles is working to combat this by applying a solar-reflecting paint on 1 million square feet of roads in the city. The GAF Cool Community Project, an initiative by roofing and waterproofing manufacturer GAF, has painted roads, parking lots, and even playgrounds in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacoima with the solar-reflective, epoxy acrylic paint. GAF partnered with local organizations, governments and scientists for the project. “Pacoima is one of the hottest parts of L.A. County and hasn’t gotten the kind of investment like a lot of other communities,” Jeff Terry, vice president for corporate social responsibility and sustainability at GAF, said, as reported by Bloomberg. “One of the challenges with urban heating is that it doesn’t stop at night. Hopefully we’re going to make this place a little bit more livable for the residents.” In Pacoima, asphalt temperatures may reach over 140°F. But one study from 2020 noted that reflective coatings reduced surface temperatures on Los Angeles streets by over 10°C (50°F) [Ed note this should be 18°F]. Fast Company reported that the Pacoima surface temperatures have already declined by 10° to 12° with the new reflecting coatings.

Note that 10 degrees Celsius is equal to 50 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re talking about the temperature outside. But when you’re talking about the difference in temperature, 10° C = 18° F. This is because their zeroes are not at the same temperature. Freezing: 0°C = 32° F.
