What I wish Joe Biden had said [1]

I just watched President Biden’s speech at Independence Hall. I was thrilled by his defense of democracy and glad he called out Donald Trump by name as the number-one enemy of America. But I kept hoping for him to say two more things. If only he’d added something along the lines of:

“Now I call on one of America’s greatest institutions, the free press! On my friends in the media, political reporters from the New York Times to the Manchester Union-Leader, from MSNBC to Fox News! I ask them to ask every candidate, for every office — not ‘Do you support Joe Biden? Do you support the Democratic Party?’ I know not everyone does! I don’t expect everyone to! But ask them: ‘Do you renounce political violence? Will you publicly oppose mob rule, domestic terrorists, and death threats? Do you pledge to accept the results of free elections, fairly decided by every eligible voter? Will you honor the will of the people? Are you for or against democracy?’ Insist on an answer!

“And I ask my Republican colleagues, politicians of the other party — not to march in lockstep with me! Not to stop honest dissent and debate! But I ask Republicans this: How many hundreds, how many thousands of times have you falsely branded your Democratic opponents as socialists? As communists? How many Democrats can you name who actually call for government control of industry? Who seek to ban books and impose theocracy? Give me their names! And until you do, don’t get your panties in a bunch when I accurately describe the semi-fascist actions of the MAGA mob!”

OK, he probably wouldn’t really say “don’t get your panties in a bunch.” But I can dream, can’t I?
