The Road Ahead

For the first time in more than 2 months, the global weekly caseload of new Covid infections has fallen back below 5 million and is now a full 40% below its most recent peak at the start of August. Even Japan and South Korea seem to have gotten back on the down escalator and hopefully are really past their recent peaks this time. OTOH, the weekly global death toll still seems to be stuck in neutral, with both the US and Japan seeing new 4-month or all-time peaks this week — though it’s hard to see how these levels can be sustained much longer if new cases continue their current downward trend.
