In the normal course of events the location of every classified document is known. In the Trump White House this accountability broke down.

Morell, a key CIA analyst for former President George W. Bush throughout his time in office, said the protocols governing access to classified information during Bush and Obama's tenures "were very rigorous and strict," and careful records were kept to track "where it was" at any given time. "That's normally what happens," he said. But he noted, "That didn't happen in this case, it sounds to me."

It seems that accountability ended when documents entered the Trump White House. Nonetheless, there is a record of all classified documents that entered the White House and those that were returned to the National Archives.

They know which documents are missing.

In my personal experience, I had to sign for every document I held. Such documents were stored in a safe with a four tumbler combination lock. At intervals, those documents were inventoried and page checked by a two person team. Every page of every document had to be accounted for.

The Trump experience shows us what can happen when people don’t understand the way things are intended to work. Perhaps they simply didn’t care or thought it wasn’t necessary. Perhaps they think it’s just a needless part of the administrative state that Steve Bannon seeks to destroy.

I do hope this is made clear to the general public the next time an “outsider” candidate is running for office.

And slightly off topic, but why the hell do we give security clearances to people simply because they have been elected?
