Florio Aims His Drive for Camden Congress Seat, 102 Years in G.O.P. Grip [1]
['Donald Janson Special To The New York Times']
Date: 1974-10-03
“There is no better way of reaching the greatest possible audience to discuss the issues,” he said.
Mr. Florio said television debates were the worst possible way of influencing voters in this race, because under the equal‐time provision of the Communications Act a television station must include the six minor candidates, leaving the major candidates “about three minutes each” to speak and no time for back‐and‐forth debate.
Running as independents are Mrs. Elizabeth L. Drevs of Haddonfield, who lost to Mr. Florio lin the Democratic primary two years ago; Mayor James J. Per ry of Somerdale, whose slogan is “independent taxpayers lwatchdog”; Raymond Carotenuto of Turnersville, “an independent American,” and Bradley S. Kirsch of Bellmawr, “Independents against apathy.”
Julius Levin of Haddon Heights is the Socialist Labor party candidate, and Emilio Andujar Jr., of Camden represents the Labor party.
A Siphoning of Votes
While none of the six minor candidates is expected to get many votes, none is a conservative in the Hunt mold, and any votes the six do get would probably cut the Florio total and harm his chances.
I Mr. Florio must win big in the city of Camden, where the Democratic organization of Mayor Angelo J. Errichetti is strong.
He had no trouble carrying Camden last time, but as this year's campaign draws to ra climax, Mr. Errichetti may be hampered in campaigning for Mr. Florio, since the Mayor is scheduled to go on trial in Trenton Oct. 21 on charges of perjury and conspiracy to evade contract bidding laws when he was the city's director of public works in 1969 and 1970.
