HUNT IS SEEKING 5TH TERM IN HOUSE [1]
['Donald Janson Special To The New York Times']
Date: 1974-04-23
On Watergate Effect
Taking note of the fact that with Watergate in the background, Democrats this year have won four of five Congressional by‐elections in previously safe Republican districts Mr. Hunt attributed the defeats to the fact that “Republicans don't come out to vote in special elections.”
He said, “Watergate will be no problem in the regular elections this fall.”
He added, however, that he did not plan to invite President Nixon to campaign for him.
The chairman of the Camder County Republican Committee disagreed with Mr. Hunt's assessment of the impact of Watergate on this fall's elections. “Watergate will make difference,” asserted Henry R. Leiner, the chairman, “but our campaign will point out that John Hunt had nothing to do with Watergate.”
Mr. Hunt, of Pitman, said he had delayed until now his decision on seeking re‐election because of a nagging case of shingles and because the Camden County Republican organization had endorsed him for re‐election only last week. The Gloucester County organization had given him its endorsement earlier. New Jersey's First Congressional District is composed of Gloucester County and most of Camden County.
