The pond at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park, New Mexico, along the Rio Grande

I thought I’d share some of the news items I’ve been seeing lately about what’s going on at our southern border. In my mind it’s easy to forget that there are actual PEOPLE involved and that discussion should not be limited to how things are viewed through only a political lens.

So with that in mind, here are a several items that have caught my attention.

This thread highlights exactly how, mostly republicans, are using the suffering of the refugees and asylum seekers for their own immoral political gain. These are people being put on buses, often unaware of why and for how long, and ending up in various parts of the country. Is it fair to say that border states shouldn’t be the unduly burdened by caring for people? Absolutely, but this is a craven political stunt that serves no humanitarian purpose. GRRRRRRRR x I am just leaving the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where I welcomed asylum seekers getting off buses from Texas.

This morning a record # of migrants arrived, approx 250 men, women and children.

I am truly appalled by how they have been treated prior to their arrival here. 1/ — Mark D. Levine (@MarkLevineNYC) August 24, 2022 A 3 month old baby needed to be hospitalized! What did all these people do for food, water and hygiene needs during the long ride? x It’s clear the migrants did not give their consent in any real way to be sent here. As many as 40% have family or close relations in other parts of the country who could provide them accommodation, but the migrants were not given the option of going to those places. 3/ — Mark D. Levine (@MarkLevineNYC) August 24, 2022 x Regardless of these obstacles, NYC is showing up strong to receive the arriving migrants. This morning there were scores of City staff and volunteers running a receiving operation at the bus terminal. Providing medical care, essential supplies, coordination social services. 5/ — Mark D. A little history lesson here, thanks to Maria Hinojosa. She also reiterates that no one is ‘illegal’. That’s not just a moral statement, but one based in US law. People are allowed to see asylum here in the US, regardless of where and how they enter the country. We are breaking our own laws every day when we send people to Mexico, immediately deport them and arrest them along the border. x “The whole idea behind ‘sanctuary’…it was created so the United States would not repeat the mistakes they made during the Holocaust when they turned away Jewish refugees.” @Maria_Hinojosa on bussing immigrants #CrossConnection pic.twitter.com/gGYcGAHZfx — The Cross Connection with Tiffany Cross (@CrossConnection) August 27, 2022 There’s a little more info about Rev. John Fife here : en.wikipedia.org/...

EVERY SINGLE POUND OF NARCOTICS! The majority of the drugs are being brought into this country by American citizens and usually through formal ports of entry. Don’t believe the hype from republicans who use this info as part of their scare tactics bag of tricks. x When politicians scream about fentanyl and point the finger of blame at migrants and “Biden’s policies,” keep in mind that from Monday to Friday last week, every single pound of fentanyl seized by the Border Patrol was found in one car driven by two U.S. citizens. https://t.co/IlDnpycGSF — Aaron Reichlin-Melnick (@ReichlinMelnick) August 27, 2022

Well folks, that’s all for now. Keep these immigrants in your hearts, and remind others that there are actual people behind the republican talking points that are spread by too many people.
