Trump had nuclear documents in his house, and he knew about them.

A rational, innocent man wouldn’t knowing do something like that.

A rational spy would make digital copies, hide them in a secret location, and destroy the originals so to avoid getting caught.

Trump isn’t rational. My guess is that he wanted the documents because he just likes having them. He even asked for them back. This is similar to hoarding behavior. These classified documents were stored in boxes with magazines and newspapers. This rang a bell for me, since I’ve known several hoarders.

Hoarders are people in need of help, but here is what it is like to help one. I would be at her home, and I start by discarding obvious trash. Old wrappers go into the trash, metal cans and plastic bottles would go into to the recycling. But oh wait: she wants to cut apart the plastic bottles to put plants in, and she wants to take the cans down to a recycling place for money. I try to throw away an old phone book, and she wants to keep it because it makes a good door stop. I try to throw out an instruction manual for an appliance she doesn’t have anymore and that nobody makes anymore, and she wants to keep that manual. Important receipts needed for tax purposes would be mixed in with a pile of unopened junk mail.

I’m not trying to excuse Trump’s behavior, just explain it. Under our legal system, mentally ill defendants are usually still held legally accountable. The insanity defense is rarely applied in part because a stay in a behavioral health center can easily exceed a typical prison sentence. “Insanity” is a legal term and not medical term; it means that a person lacks the ability to determine right from wrong.

It’s also possible that Trump is trying to feign mental illness to avoid accountability. But the people around Trump should still know better. The DOJ is correct to look into this.
