Far Out

On our trip to Turkey, in the summer months, we took a bus trip with our tour group up the Atlas Mountains, till we were at snow levels. We went to a restaurant on a narrow road. Icy cold inside. There were tiny propane heaters near some of the tables. Tubes of propane snaked over the floors, crossing electric wires. Dogs were walking all around. The food was…..unmemorable. Far out.

On our earlier trip to Viet Nam, we were in a dense jungle. We got into separate rowboats and rowed off to the unknown. The water was invisible, covered as it was with plant growth. Suddenly a covered building appeared in the middle of nowhere. A restaurant!

This was a total surprise, with some of the best food we had on the trip. Entertainment as well.

Far out.

Two days ago we went to a local restaurant, Kiraku Sushi & Ramen. We had checked on line, and the MENU looked fantastic.

We walked in, sat down, and at the table was a laptop, attached by a wire. No staff to be seen. There was a photo of every food and drink selection, and by pressing and holding down the photo, a description in detail was shown. I noticed a “cart” symbol in the corner, so I figured out the system: click the photo and it was added to the cart, just like Amazon. I clicked “order” and we waited, while musing on the 21st century. We were in a booth, nest to a long shelf. Suddenly a skateboard-like mini-cart zoomed up, stopped by our table, and on it was our order!

A minute later, a robot on wheels trundled down the aisle to the next booth, holding a more extensive order than ours. A Japanese voice spoke to the customers but I couldn’t make it out.

Finally a human appeared and took my credit card. Very Far Out!

Have y’all seen the like of this much automation or as far out?
