Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!

Are you psyched to work for the midterms? Because we need all good gnusies to work for the midterms!

We can do this, my friends. Did you see what happened in the NY 19 special election? The Democrat, Pat Ryan, was down in the polls to the Republican, Molinaro. Despite the polls and the pundits, Pat Ryan won!!! 😄 Moreover, NY 19 is the swingiest of districts. It went for tRump in 2016, the Ds in 2018, and Biden in 2020. The pundits thought it would swing back for this special election, but it didn’t.

But we only win if we work for it. There are so many ways to help. Donating money, of course. Letters to the editor. Contacting your local parties and seeing what you can do.

And signs. People here have been talking about how signs make a difference. Do you put a sign in your yard, or do you do signs in some other way? Because that seems to make a difference. Numerous gnusies have remarked on how they have noticed different signage. I know that when I see good signs, well, I feel better.

Pour yourself a serving of your favorite beverage, fortify yourself with some good news, and then roll up your sleeves. We have work to do.

Regular Scheduled Programming

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:

💙 There are more of us than there are of them.

💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!

💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

🗽 Biden as President ! 🗽

Biden, Harris and their administration have been hard at work (actually, they have been on vacation). Here are the last week’s posts at the White House briefing room.

New Secret Service director (who will have to deal with all the scandals) NPR

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Wednesday named Kim Cheatle, a veteran Secret Service official, to be the agency's next director as it faces controversy over missing text messages around the time thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol. Cheatle, who left the Secret Service in 2021 for a job as a security executive at PepsiCo, takes the reins as multiple congressional committees and the Department of Homeland Security's internal watchdog are investigating the missing text messages, which the Secret Service has said were purged during a technology transition. Cheatle had served in the Secret Service for 27 years and was the first woman to be named assistant director of protective operations, the division that provides protection to the president and other dignitaries. Cheatle had served on Biden's protective detail when he was vice president. During that time, Biden "came to trust" her judgment and counsel, he said in a statement.

Well done, Kevin Priola! Welcome to sanity.

x Sen. Kevin Priola also cited the Republican party's lack of action on climate change, saying his GOP colleagues "consistently and proudly seek to impede progress, and I can't, in good conscience, be silent about that." — Republicans against Trumpism (@RpsAgainstTrump) August 22, 2022

He may seem like a more conservative D at first, but this switch makes it harder for the Rs to stage a coup in CO. And I’ve noticed that when Rs unshackle themselves from the crazy party, they often relax on some social issues. Laura Kelly and Charlie Crist are both former Rs. And even Liz Cheney voted to protect same-sex marriage.

And in Florida — where there’s a lot to do — two jerks lose elections. Clarissa Lin-Jam, BuzzFeed News

With the fight over abortion rights looming large over the midterm elections, voters in Florida ousted two prominent anti-abortion elected officials in separate races on Tuesday. Florida Rep. James Bush lost his reelection bid, a notable defeat for the sole Democrat in the state legislature who voted on a 15-week abortion ban and the anti-LGBTQ "Don't Say Gay" bill. ✂️ Florida voters also ousted Jared Smith, an incumbent circuit judge for Hillsborough County who gained notoriety for rejecting a teenager's request for an abortion because her grades were low. The race between Smith and his opponent, Nancy Jacobs, was relatively contentious for a typically low-key nonpartisan judgeship election, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Smith had denied a 17-year-old seeking an abortion without parental consent in January this year on the basis that her grades were low and that she lacked "intelligence or credibility," and was therefore not mature enough to get an abortion. An appeals court later overturned his ruling.

Note that James Bush, D, seems to have nothing to do with the Bush family. And apparently Jared Smith was appointed by De Santis.

Eight sources say feds not done with Matt Gaetz Jose Pagliery, Roger Sollenberger, Asta Hemenway The Daily Beast

That federal probe that generated national attention for a few weeks last year has since quieted down. But it’s not over. Eight people with direct knowledge of the probe confirmed to The Daily Beast that the case is still unfolding—albeit at a methodical pace—as federal prosecutors work their way across a number of spokes of possible criminality. While each zone has its own sets of witnesses, subjects, and targets, all of it spirals out from one man: a crooked local tax official and Gaetz’s former “wingman,” Joel Greenberg. Lyle Mazin, a criminal defense attorney who represents a witness in the case, told The Daily Beast that the quiet should not be misconstrued as reluctance on the part of Roger Handberg, a federal prosecutor who led the local team conducting the investigation and now leads the Florida Middle District U.S. Attorney’s Office. “He’s methodical. He doesn’t let anything go,” Mazin said. “If you’re going after a monster, you have to get it right—especially when you have a bunch of Trump supporters who’ll come after you.”

Heh, heh! Cheney is coming for you!

Guilty plea from degenerates who stole Biden’s daughter’s diary Liz Dye Wonkette

Today in New York, a couple of dipshits named Aimee Harris and Robert Kurlander pled guilty to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property after they stole Ashley Biden's rehab diary and sold it to Project Veritas. Remember these filthy ghouls? We talked about them before: In early 2020, Ashley Biden, who had struggled with addiction, was staying in a friend's house in Delray Beach, Florida. She decided to come back to Philadelphia during her father's campaign, but she left some things at the house, because she intended to return after the election. In her absence, the friend allowed another woman named Aimee Harris to move in. Harris found items belonging to Ashley Biden, including a diary she had kept during a stint in rehab, and decided to turn them into cash.

Harris teamed up with a buddy named Richard Kurlander, and the two of them successfully managed to sell the diary to Project Veritas for $40,000, because they are disgusting people who should never live this down as long as they live. And apparently these two sorry excuses for human beings have been doing quite a bit of talking themselves, to the FBI and the nice people at the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

🔥 OH, AND THE AFFIDAVIT (REDACTED) IS TO BE RELEASED TODAY — SHOWING WHY THE FBI HAD TO SEARCH MAR-A-LAGO.

Remarks by President Biden on the student loan relief Press Release

THE PRESIDENT: Hey, folks. Well, good afternoon. When America made 12 years of public education universal in the last century, we became — not figuratively, literally — the best-educated public in the world and better prepared than any other nation. And I would argue that it’s one of the reasons why we were so successful and have been so successful.

But as you’ve all observed, other nations have caught up. In the 21st century — in my view and I think the vast majority of Americans’ — 12 years of universal education is not enough, and we’re going to be outcompeted by the rest of the world if we don’t take action.

But here’s the deal: The cost of education beyond high school has gone up significantly. The total cost to attend a public four-year university has tripled — nearly tripled in 40 years — tripled.

Instead of properly funding public colleges, many states have cut back their support. We were just talking about that in the Oval. Many states have cut back support for their — their state universities, leaving students to pick up more of the tab. ✂️ All of — all of this means is the entire — an entire generation is now saddled with unsustainable debt in exchange for an attempt, at least, at a college degree.

The burden is so heavy that even if you graduate, you may not have access to the middle-class life that the college degree once provided. Many people — many people can’t qualify for a mortgage to buy a home because the debt they continue to carry. They — you know, they carry — it’s too high. They can’t come up with a down payment anyway.

A lot of folks are even putting off starting families because of the cost. And the dream of starting or owning your business is just way off in the distance with a debt that’s — that so many are saddled with.

This is another example of Biden delivering as promised. Now, the Rs were always ready to make hay of this, because one of the great divides in the country is the uneducated and their deep resentment of the educated. I have actually been rather worried about it, because I think it is one of the great problems. Why else would the GQP celebrate ignorance and ban books?

But for once the Ds were ready, and the salvos are coming out of the White House itself! Not only is the Biden reminding the country of the 2 trillion dollar tax cut the Rs gave to billionaires, they’re coming out swinging at critics. Here’s an example:

x Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene had $183,504 in PPP loans forgiven.https://t.co/4FoCymt8TB — The White House (@WhiteHouse) August 25, 2022

Hey, I think Dark Brandon has taken over, don’t you? And we love it.

Here are some R hypocrites whose loans have been forgiven:

x So much better than paying for this, Kim: pic.twitter.com/Pl72WgEcIx — Bill Prady ⚛️ (@billprady) August 25, 2022

Because of this — and I’d like to have a better explanation of why these people got loans free taxpayer money for the Paycheck Protection Program. If some of them were running businesses, e.g. restaurants, during the pandemic, it might be OK, but the money was given out during the tRump administration when oversight was lax missing (deliberately). Anyway, it’s clear that there have been many searches on this and I think it’s going to shut up some of the critics. Well done, Biden!

How was this possible?

x If you’re wondering why the @WhiteHouse account is ROASTING Republicans lately, thank Megan Coyne, who was recently hired as President Biden’s Deputy Director of Platforms for the Office of Digital Strategy. RT TO THANK MEGAN FOR DOING A GREAT JOB AT CALLING OUT REPUBLICANS! pic.twitter.com/QoBPqWPRNR — Occupy Democrats (@OccupyDemocrats) August 26, 2022

And people are pleased:

x At times this summer I heavily criticized Dems for not delivering nearly as much as I felt they could- but in the past month or so I really don't know what has made Dems start kicking so much ass but I love it. I have been proven wrong and am thankful. — David Hogg ☮️ (@davidhogg111) August 25, 2022

Also, if you’re wondering about whether or not some of those loans will be investigated, the time to investigate those PPP loans was extended. WH Press release from August 5

On Friday, August 5, 2022, the President signed into law: H.R. 7334, the “COVID–19 EIDL Fraud Statute of Limitations Act of 2022,” which establishes a ten-year statute of limitations for fraud by borrowers under the Small Business Administration’s COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan programs. ✂️ H.R. 7352, the “PPP and Bank Fraud Enforcement Harmonization Act of 2022,” which establishes a ten-year statute of limitations for fraud by borrowers under the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program.

By the way it passed unanimously!!! 421 to 0 back in March in the House… I hope it bites some of the R congress critters in the butt.

Now we segue to unity...

International support of Taiwan grows Bethany Allen-Ebrahamian Axios

Some countries are showing stronger support for Taiwan in response to China's growing pressure on the self-governing island. Why it matters: Beijing's show of force against Taiwan in the wake of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit shocked many democratic governments and seems to have backfired — at least for now — by pushing some countries closer to the island. What's happening: The U.S. announced last week that it would hold trade talks with Taiwan in the fall, a major step toward a bilateral trade deal that proponents for closer U.S.-Taiwan ties have long advocated.

Even female tRump voters don’t want abortion restrictions Brad Reed Raw Story

Huffington Post's Jonathan Cohn this week talked with Ana Greenberg, a researcher who conducts focus groups as part of her work at GQR Research, and she says that it isn't only Democratic voters who are motivated by the end of Roe. “I was doing focus groups the other night — there were three Trump voters, all women, all pissed off about the Dobbs decision,” she says. Danny Franklin, partner at Bully Pulpit Interactive, similarly tells Cohn that many people who tell pollsters they're angry about where the country is right now aren't just upset about inflation, but also at a Supreme Court that has taken their rights away. “You have a bunch of Supreme Court justices and a bunch of Christian nationalists saying you can’t have control over your own body ― and people are thinking, nope, no way, I don’t want that," he says.

Michigan Chipotle workers vote to unionize Brad Dress The Hill

Chipotle workers in Lansing, Mich., overwhelmingly voted to become the first store in the restaurant chain to formally unionize on Thursday. Employees voted 11-3 to unionize with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters for better pay, work hours and relationships with management. The election was administered and tallied by the National Labor Relations Board after a petition was filed last month.

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.

They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. A number of top Fox News hosts and staffers are among the individuals who are slated to be deposed as part of Dominion Voting Systems’ ongoing defamation lawsuit against the cable giant. Fox News host Tucker Carlson is set to face questions on Friday from Dominion’s lawyers, The New York Times reported, with fellow prime-time star Sean Hannity and former Fox host Lou Dobbs slated to be deposed next week. Other top Fox personalities including Jeanine Pirro and Steve Doocy have already faced questions from Dominion’s attorneys in the case, according to the Times, and Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott and other top editorial leaders at the network are expected to be deposed in the coming weeks as well.

Uvalde finally fires worthless police chief Evan Hurst Wonkette

Here is a period at the end of one specific sentence that's part of America's encyclopedia-length story about innocent people getting their faces blown off by guns because America is too chickenshit of a country to do anything about the motherfucking guns. The garbage police chief for the independent school district (ISD) in Uvalde, Texas, Pete Arredondo, has been unanimously fired by the school board, three months to the day after the massacre that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers at the local elementary school. ✂️ And this douchebag couldn't even bother to show up for his getting-fired hearing. Instead, before the hearing, his lawyer released a 17-page Statement Of Whinyass (is that the legal term? we cannot remember) about why the hearing was unfair. It said the school board was not following the right procedures to fire him. It explained that actually Arredondo did an awesome job. It whined about a whole lot of other things, none of which probably will clear your personal bar for things you want to read today. It is seriously the 17 most tedious pages we have ever tried to skim. It is just blah blah blah blah blah. This is the final whine, if you skip to the end like everyone else probably did: “Chief Arredondo will not participate in his own illegal and unconstitutional public lynching and respectfully requests the Board immediately reinstate him, with all backpay and benefits and close the complaint as unfounded,” the statement concludes. Well okeydoke, but still fired!

In what is not at all surprising news, tRump’s Truth Social is not paying its bills! Sharon Knolle Yahoo News

Donald Trump’s Truth Social is in a battle with RightForge over $1.6 million the conservative internet-hosting vendor says it’s owed, according to a Fox Business report Thursday. Three sources told Fox Business that Truth Social stopped making payments in March, just a month after launching in February. According to these sources, RightForge is threatening legal action over the money owed for setting up Truth Social’s infrastructure. Trump founded the alternative social media platform after being banned from Twitter in January 2021. He was permanently kicked off after his tweets were deemed “likely to inspire others to replicate the violent acts that took place on January 6, 2021.”

What’s nice about this is the fact that tRump is stiffing the right and not the left at this point.

That’s not the only woe for Truth Social. The trademark for Truth Social was just denied. Emily Peck, Sarah Fischer Axios

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) refused Donald Trump's application for a trademark for "Truth Social," the name of his social media company earlier this month. A trademark lawyer in Washington surfaced the filing on Thursday. Why it matters: The trademark refusal is just the latest setback for the former president's social media app and its parent company, which have been beset by a raft of issues over the past few months.

Commit the crime and do the time. This is what they’re seeking, not a sentence yet, but it should send shivers down the spines of the defendants.

📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️

Dr. Fauci: Truth in the Face of Anger and Angst Robin Givhan Washington Post

For the last three years, this trim, gray-haired doctor with the wire-rimmed glasses has been the vessel into which the country has poured all its fears and frustrations. He is hero and tormentor. Truth-teller and unreliable narrator. He has borne our angst. And through it all, he’s shown the public nothing but patience and decency — and only the occasional flares of angry exasperation mostly reserved for a senator named Rand Paul (R-Ky.) whose preferred response to the pandemic might be summed up as do-as-little-as-possible. his sweeping impact not just on Americans but on people around the world. “As he leaves his position in the U.S. government, I know the American people and the entire world will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci’s expertise in whatever he does next. Whether you’ve met him personally or not, he has touched all Americans’ lives with his work.” ✂️ Fauci’s admirers greeted his retirement announcement with a flurry of adulation for his lifetime of public service and his steady hand during historically turbulent times. Biden praised his sweeping impact not just on Americans but on people around the world. “As he leaves his position in the U.S. government, I know the American people and the entire world will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci’s expertise in whatever he does next. Whether you’ve met him personally or not, he has touched all Americans’ lives with his work.” ✂️ But if his political critics, particularly those Republicans in Congress, have their way, Fauci will spend a significant portion of his retirement testifying before one investigative panel after another. They blame Fauci for everything from the coronavirus itself to mascne. The disdain has brought threats. The doctor needs security. And yet he has carried on. That has been the most remarkable thing of all. He could have retired long ago. He could have silenced the angry mob by going on his way. Fauci’s critics were so childish that they mocked Fauci’s bad arm when he threw out baseball’s ceremonial opening pitch in 2020 and it missed the mark. President Donald Trump mocked Fauci. And still, the doctor patiently offered the country his most informed advice.

Fauci told the truth and was the only reliable voice in government for a while. Dr. Birx blew it. Governor Cuomo blew it. Rebekah Jones was hounded out of her position in Florida. And we all know what we think of the hawkers of hydrochloroquine.

Thanks for your service, Dr. Fauci!

Breakthrough in cure for tinnitus! University of Auckland Science Daily

After 20 years searching for a cure for tinnitus, researchers at the University of Auckland are excited by 'encouraging results' from a clinical trial of a mobile-phone-based therapy. The study randomised 61 patients to one of two treatments, the prototype of the new 'digital polytherapeutic' or a popular self-help app producing white noise. On average, the group with the polytherapeutic (31 people) showed clinically significant improvements at 12 weeks, while the other group (30 people) did not. The results have just been published in Frontiers in Neurology. "This is more significant than some of our earlier work and is likely to have a direct impact on future treatment of tinnitus," Associate Professor in Audiology Grant Searchfield says.

Actually, I had tinnitus due to Menière’s. It went away when I gave up gluten. But I’m happy for everyone else.

Capping those wells! Brad Dress The Hill

The Department of the Interior on Thursday announced a $560 million grant to 24 states to start plugging up and reclaiming abandoned oil and gas wells. The Interior department estimates there are more than 10,000 of the so-called orphan wells across those 24 states that leak methane, significantly polluting communities and recreation spaces and contributing to climate change. The funding to plug up the wells comes from President Biden’s historic infrastructure package passed last year. The law includes $4.7 billion specifically to address the orphan wells. Thursday’s funding is part of a phase one investment of $1.15 billion.

🚌 Kansas City made transit safer by making it free Sandy Smith Reasons to Be Cheerful

Kansas City, Missouri, made national headlines in the fall of 2019 when its city council voted unanimously to become America’s first large city to make public transportation free citywide. Now, two and a half years later, anyone living anywhere in the city can ride buses without paying a fare. ✂️ A study conducted as part of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City’s annual “State of Black Kansas City” report last year asked 1,686 riders for their feedback on what Zero Fare has enabled them to do. The responses show how a Zero Fare policy makes a big difference in these riders’ ability to exercise the so-called “right to the city.” Almost 90 percent of the riders surveyed said they rode the buses more as a result of Zero Fare. About 92 percent said it allowed them to shop for food more often; 88 percent said they could see their healthcare providers more easily or more often; 82 percent said it allowed them to get or keep a job; and 86 percent said it made them feel like city leadership is concerned about their needs — a sore subject for mostly-Black East Side residents, who often complain that the city pays more attention to its whiter and more affluent West Side. ✂️ Besides the increased mobility and financial benefits, nearly 80 percent of the residents surveyed also said Zero Fare increased their sense of safety on the bus. That points to one of the more counterintuitive benefits of eliminating fares: The buses became safer to ride.
