The world of music, and our old town, lost an irreplaceable treasure this week with the passing of drummer, guitarist, composer and producer Carlo Nuccio.
A native of old Jefferson, just outside of the city, Carlo began his study of the speech of rhythm at a young age. His father, the fighter Joseph Nuccio, owned the French Quarter bar Harry’s Place, where Carlo tap danced for tips from the age of four and studied everything on the juke box.
By ten, he was playing drums, beginning a career that shaped recordings by artists from Anders Osborne to Emmylou Harris to Tori Amos to Dr. John. Among the many strikingly original combos he co-founded or joined were the Continental Drifters and Royal Fingerbowl. With Steve Monistere, he co-wrote and co-produced perhaps the most successful sports novelty record of all time, “Who Dat.”
Along with being one of the city’s most influential drummers, not a small claim, Carlo was also a New Orleans Character of the first order, a raconteur of truly epic renown. If you heard half of his stories, you’d find them hard to believe, unless you’d lived through a couple. Keith Spera of the Times-Picayune/Advocate gives a feeling of what a larger-than-life fellow Carlo was.
Carlo was also a true friend who will be missed by so many. There’s a Carlo-shaped hole in our town that nothing else is ever going to fit.
