Here's my problem with student loan forgiveness in its current incarnation [1]

First off, before I get into my problem with it, I want to say that I applaud Biden, the man who insisted that student loan debt not be dischargeable in bankruptcy back in the day, for being a man who actually can take in new data and change his opinion with changing times and changing circumstances. Overall, I think this student loan forgiveness is way, way, way more good than bad. Just wanted to set that straight.

Next, I want to say that my problem has nothing to do with undeserving people getting relief. Sure, there will be some, but the vast majority of people who get relief from this are people who deserve it and will be in much better condition to contribute to society because of it. My problem also has nothing to do with this action by the Biden administration stoking inflation because it won’t, and anyone who thinks it will has never struggled with the question of do I pay my student loan or my electric bill this month.

Here’s my problem. I don’t see how this forgiveness of student debt for those who currently are burdened by it fixes the problem of college being WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. What are we doing to make sure that the high school seniors today aren’t gonna be facing the same crushing financial experience that their big brothers and sisters, their aunts and uncles and parents, have been crushed under for the past 20 years?

If anyone knows that answer, I’d sure love to hear it.
