Inspiring Young Minds [1]

My recent blog titled “The Travesty of “Woke” spoke of the importance of teaching student’s history, void of unpleasant omissions, politics and glorification.

However, today I am compelled to recognize how many wonderful teachers that we have and how they often change the lives of their students.

Most of us were fortunate enough to have had at least one teacher who inspired us, I know that I had a few. Which is why I so appreciated a recent Facebook blog written by “Robert Reich,” former Labor Secretary and current professor at UC Berkeley, as a perfect example of just how important teachers can be to young minds.

Reich’s heartwarming recollection is well worth the read.

The last remaining weeks in August mark the beginning of the school year for many public schools. Every year about this time I think of Alice Camp.

I arrived in her third-grade classroom in Lewisboro Elementary School, in South Salem, New York, as an extremely short, shy, insecure 8-year-old who was often bullied and mocked on the bus and made to feel like a loser on the playground, and had no particular interest in school.

But she saw in me something I didn’t see. She fed me books, projects, ideas. She challenged me and praised me. She made me feel special. Her slightly whacky sense of humor connected with mine.
