This cute couple topped newly-formed Casa Brillig's wedding cake
Thirty years ago today, in a church just outside the borders of Woodstock NY, two people were married in what was possibly the least-religious Catholic wedding ceremony ever. While I had been raised Catholic, my betrothed had not, and when handed the little booklet of permissible wedding readings, we chose (one “Old Testament”, one “New Testament”, and one “Gospel”) the least “religious” ones possible. It was, however, sufficient for us to be pronounced man and wife, and thus Casa Brillig was formed.
I cannot believe it’s been three decades already (heck, I can’t believe it’s been FIVE years since I last wrote on my anniversary). They say time flies when you’re having fun, and for all the stresses of life, it was, is, and by all expectations will continue to be fun. And through it all, there’s been music. Mr. Brillig and I joke that I married him for (1) his spiffy red car; and (2) his amazing CD collection. So let me bring you a collection of songs that either came to fame in 1992, or that the DJ played at our wedding:
First up, the song that FINALLY got people up and dancing at the reception. The DJ played a remix of this 1982 song that was about ten minutes long...
We were children of the 80s… there was NO WAY a wedding reception could happen without this 1978 song because we’d danced to it through high school, college and beyond:
I don’t remember if it was played at the reception (probably not for fear of giving our elders a stroke), but this was a Billboard Top hit for all of July 1992:
While this was a top hit from Aug 15-Nov 7 1992, it would NOT have made a good wedding song:
The song that nearly made me a one-day bride… it was the ONE ‘wedding thing’ the future Mr. Brillig asked we not do. So my mother enlisted my Aunt, who’d come from Great Britain for the wedding, to spin a tale of a traditional British dance, and poor Mr. Brillig ended up dancing this dance with a chicken tea cozy on his head. Truly, he loves me.
I can't even look at the video. Click through to hear all 2:40 of the Chicken Dance.
Before we hop the fold and get to three days of Tops, the song Mr. Brillig and I chose for our first dance. The first time we ever went out (as FRIENDS, of course, JUST AS FRIENDS!!! :-)) was to see When Harry Met Sally. So of course this was our song:
And with that, let’s hop the fold!
