Black & White & Red All Over
Today would have been my Mom’s 90th birthday, so I’m finishing one of her many UFOs.
DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
This is a quilt that was started years ago and put in a bin. A while back my granddaughter was poking around and found it. There were several blocks made so we pulled them out to take a look. There were 12 completed blocks, 9 of them pieced together. And then there was a stack of cut out pieces (enough for about 60 more blocks!).
Back story: When Mom and I first discovered Crazy Curves (Book and templates by Elisa Wilson) we went a little crazy for a while:
Our beginning attempts after a class at the local quilt shop
Mom tended to work with black and whites (she loved to collect matching FQs) or monochromatic combinations because she said it was one less stress when selecting fabrics. I, on the other hand, always seem to go with bright (loud) colors. Guess who made which quilts.

So, back to the present… I thought I’d start piecing some blocks at the end of each day a few at a time but this is the kind of thing that I get a little compulsive over and ended up doing them all in one night. I was talking with my daughter (my design consultant though not a quilter) about what to do with them and she reminded me that my fall back is always pinwheels. Her next question was how was I going to use another color to give it pop. Red is always our go-to with black and white, now just how to lay it all out. I had thought about only doing a border in red but when I got it down on the floor to fiddle with the blocks it became obvious that it needed red sashing. After it was complete, my daughter came over to dig around to find the border and backing. (See a pattern? My kids like to rummaging around my sewing room.) I’m glad I had a few alternatives and I think we found the perfect combination. As I always second guess the final quilt, I should have used a larger outer border. Binding is finished!
Happy Birthday, Mom, you’re always close by when I’m quilting.
