They wanted to talk to me, she said, because my book had “potential.” They wanted to offer me “marketing services.” They would promote my book at the famous Frankfurt Book Fair! Fame and fortune awaited for my 50-page, queer-themed short story chapbook. If I’d had any doubts about it being a scam, that ended when she claimed that Amazon had given them my home phone number. I told her I’d get back to her.
After getting them off the phone, I googled the company name along with “scam,” and it got me to a scam-busting site with a list of red flags that was basically a script for the conversation we’d just had. Like all struggling authors, I dream of best-seller lists and movie contracts. But I’m keeping my day job.
SPEAKING OF SCAMS: Just discovered an update on a TC diary I wrote years ago. The “Kids for Cash” scandal involved two Pennsylvania judges who were convicted of taking bribes from a for-profit juvenile facility, in exchange for keeping the cells full. The judges have now been ordered to pay $200 million in a civil lawsuit. But it’s been sixteen years since they were convicted — the damage done to those young lives can’t be undone.
