Feeling Optimistic in Rural Virginia
Here I am in deep red, rural Virginia, and I feel optimistic about the upcoming elections. I really do. Because right now there are multiple issues where most voters agree with Democrats. We just need to make them realize it.
Last year I worked on Emily Scott’s campaign against Todd Gilbert who is now the Majority Leader of the House of Delegates; and Emily has recently announced that she will challenge him again in 2023.
One issue that is a winner for us is gun reform. Yes, I know rural voters love their guns. That’s true but they also love their children and their grandmom's and their friends. No Republican mom wants to have to go down to the school and identify their child by her shoes - any more than a Democrat mom does. And they don’t want their grandmom gunned down in the grocery store either. They just don’t.
Right now, we have more mass shootings in America then we have days of the year, and everyone knows it; and Uvalde has shown us that just having more guns is not the answer. If Republican mom’s want to keep AR style weapons away from disgruntled whack jobs, they are going to have to vote for Democrats.
Because as much as Republican lawmakers might want to protect their own children from mass shooters, they cannot support any meaningful gun reform legislation. They can’t because their donors won’t let them. And yes, I know the recent bipartisan law did help the situation, but it did nothing to keep AR style weapons out of schools and grocery stores. So, this is an opportunity. We must make sure that Republican voters know that the only way to keep their kids and grandmoms safe is to vote for a Democrat.
We recently recorded this 30 second radio ad targeting gun owners about this issue. We would like to start running it on the radio right away. I think this type of ad could help get some Rrepublicans to do the right thing, even if they don’t tell anyone.

With redistricting in Virginia, our voting district has changed from 15 to 33. We plan to continue to raise issues to try to help rural democrats from now until the 2023 election.
