Why didn't Garland act earlier? [1]

There has been speculation that Garland finally acted because of the pressure generated by the Jan. 6th Committee. That makes sense to me, and it’s a possible partial explanation of why he acted now. What I still don’t understand is why he waited 1.5 years to do anything about this considering the implications for our national security (in multiple ways).

I won’t pretend to understand Merrick Garland. Like many others on this site I’ve been frustrated about the pace of the investigation, and I’ve questioned whether any of the top insurrectionists would ever face justice. While things have been looking up recently, this 1.5 year gap still troubles me.

We know that he’s had those documents since he left the White House. Even if these were relatively harmless documents, he was clearly breaking the law. Why did it take NARA/DOJ so long to escalate their demands for these documents? It seems it took a year before this was being taken seriously.

Knowing now how serious these documents really were underlines my concern over the timeline. Here are two possible reasons (I’m sure there are more—and would love to hear your thoughts in the comments): 1) Incompetence between DOJ and NARA—not well-coordinated, no clear idea of what was taken, and no sense of urgency. This could have been partly due to Trump holdovers, or smoke screens left behind. 2) Garland was waiting. Communications at MAL were being closely monitored. Any foreign agents there were being wire-tapped, or someone was wearing a wire, there may have been multiple informants there, and the DOJ was waiting for some kind of transaction that would trap not only the traitors associated with the traitor-in-chief, but also foreign agents. Maybe the documents were bait.

Considering what an on-going shitshow of a national security nightmare MAL has been since IQ45 first declared his candidacy, it makes sense to me that we’d have our spies all over the place. But it also makes sense to me that DOJ would want to get those documents out of there ASAP.

This is speculation and I’m not arguing that this is what actually happened. I just want to know why there was such a long wait and have yet to hear a good explanation.
