Russian soldiers carry a body from the ruins of the destroyed Wagner Group HQ in Popasna, Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces have destroyed the Wagner Group’s base in the occupied city of Popasna in eastern Ukraine, according to Russian Telegram channels. But how they managed to target the private military group’s base in the Luhansk region shows that it’s not only the Russian military that can screw things up.

The attack came just days after a Russian war correspondent published detailed pictures of the mercenaries’ base on Telegram that the Ukrainian military apparently used to target it.

Wagner Group mercenaries have been accused of committing war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine, Syria and some African countries.

Yuriy Kotenok, a Russian propagandist, wrote on Telegram that Ukrainian forces had used HIMARS to hit the Wagner Group base in Popasna on Sunday. Ukrainian officials have not indicated whether HIMARS were used.

Photos showing bodies in military uniforms being taken out of a destroyed building in Popasna were published on social media. There were no immediate reports on how many were killed or wounded in the attack.

On Aug. 8, Russian war correspondent Sergey Sereda described his visit to the base in Popasna on Telegram, according to the Russian-language Radio Liberty, which is funded by the U.S. government.

Sereda said, “Arrived in Popasna, stopped by the headquarters of Wagner PMC. They met me like family and told several funny stories."

One of the photos he posted shows a sign with the address of the nearest bomb shelter — Myronivska Street, 12. That was apparently enough for the building to be targeted.

Another photo that Sereda posted reportely shows Yeygeny Prigozhin, a Russian oligarch who is close to Vladimir Putin and controls a network of companies. He reportedly owns the Wagner Group, although he has denied this.

It is not known if Prigozhin was at the base when it was attacked, and if he was whether he was hurt.

Prigozhin also was linked to the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency, a social media troll farm. He was charged with funding and organizing operations for the purpose of interference with the U.S. political and electoral processes, including the 2016 presidential election. He is on the FBI’s wanted list.

Well, operational security breaches such as this one certainly won’t help the Wagner Group’s difficulties recruiting more cannon fodder for vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. Wagner has gotten so desperate that it’s even reportedly been recruiting prison inmates.
