The attack and assassination attempt on Salman Rushdie last week chilled me to the core and should shock anyone who values the freedom of speech.
The latest news is that the author is on the road to recovery with a few lifechanging injuries, otherwise in good spirits.
We’re still waiting to find out what motivated a 24-year-old who wasn’t even alive when Rushdie published his Satanic Verses, the book the precipitated the fatwa on his life.
For decades the threat hung over this life, even after the Iranian government overtly said they were no longer pursuing his death, all the while adding to the bounty fund to kill him.
Until last Friday, Rushdie had long returned to an ordinary life, making relaxed public appearances without security present. This had been a long journey for a writer who has suffered incalculable emotional and psychological harm by the isolation and fear he has had to endure for years.
He can’t even travel to India, his home country.
But Rushdie’s case is not isolated. Although his case is the most well known, countless writers and journalists have been killed and are facing death threats over a fundamental right of free expression. We need to stand in solidarity with all of them, Salman Rushdie included.
