What to do?

Moving to a condo community in liberal Sonoma County, we engaged with our new neighbors readily, as we were isolated during our 40 years on the farm. Enjoyable and interesting folks, by and large. There were several avowed republicans, and we engaged with them, to no avail. Interestingly they have all moved away, to Texas and Idaho. Sort of explains how a state can go completely off the rails.

We have made political contributions for years, and here we joined the Santa Rosa Democratic Club. We did some texting, but settled on post carding, which has been shown to have an actual impact on political outcomes. We began at people’s homes, then commercial venues which allowed groups to gather (and please buy a few pizzas). Covid moved all to Zoom, but the work continued and expanded. Hundreds of thousands have been sent. Post carding parties are available almost every day, including at the Sonoma County Democratic Party headquarters. We have made many friends through these gatherings.

We also enjoy the social fundraisers. These are fun, though they do nothing to change anyone’s mind politically. We have met many local and national politicians at these. I mention this because today is the Sonoma Dems Annual BBQ Fundraiser. We know we’ll meet lots of our political friends, and often we discover like-minded neighbors as well.

This event may last all afternoon so I will schedule this diary in case I don’t get back in time. Let us know what opportunities for political engagement exist in your area. I believe making one’s presence known at rallies and in letters-to-the-editor, and even yard signs, is important. There’s more of us than them!
