Wondering if he should make a break for it?
Before we consider how miserable the former president might be — let’s consider how lame his excuses are. I’ll be brief, we all have clips of pundits predicting his timely demise to watch, on repeat. Unless you’re of the stripe who wants to hear about how — no matter how despicable republican leadership is (and the majority of their rank and file right now) — the left will blow it in the midterms. Because there are plenty of folks reading the tea leaves who will tell us ‘Murika don’t have a chance.
But first — those excuses. The most powerful man in the world accidentally stole state secrets and absentmindedly kept them from the agencies demanding their immediate return. Or, as a constant reader and indefatigable consumer of knowledge, he routinely declassified everything he touched so that he could pull all-nighters.
All those 3:00 a.m. tweets make so much more sense now.
Imagine how delighted he was that after declassifying the top secret stuff, he could get the my pillow guy to help with his homework.
Now for the other question? How miserable is he? That answer’s easy, not miserable enough. If you read Mary Trump’s first book, you know he never encountered natural consequences. Hell, after he destroyed his finances and went bankrupt, the banks paid his bills so he’d still look rich! Seems everyone in power, in DJT’s life, has thought, Trump looking capable is easily more important than Trump actually being capable.
(Yeah, I’m looking at you McConnell, Graham, Cruz, et al.)
Now 1/3 of the voters are stuck with the same post screwing dilemma the banks had — do they keep pretending he was worthy of the investment, hoping he fakes it ‘til he makes it — or do they actually go find someone with the capacity needed for the task?
For the “Gee, I think I’ll storm the FBI” types — faking it is all he’ll ever need to do. And his supporters will meet with the same grizzly end, literally or metaphorically.
But suffering? Is he sweating? Losing sleep? Apologizing to his grandchildren? Has he wandered to the nearest bridge experiencing It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey existential dread — that he’d be better off if he’d never lived at all?
And the ultimate question (as comic book artist Jason Seaux asserts)... Is DJT miserable enough to flee the country? Is it possible Trump is so wretchedly unhappy — so fearful of losing his freedom — that he might chuck it all and run? Has life in his world of gold leaf and fawning sycophants gotten so ungainly that he might leave his homeland and seek a better existence elsewhere?
Well there you have the level of misery that might serve as a natural consequence to the former president’s actions. Remember any one of the border refugees who fled to the US for a better life — how terrified were they to leave behind the misery that existed in their native land? Is Trump at that level of misery yet?
In the case of one man, Trump’s family separation policy ripped his child from his arms. That night the man hanged himself in his cell.
No, no matter how much sweat pours off the former president. No matter how many hundreds of times he professes his concern for self-incrimination (440 at last count), he’ll never be as miserable as he has made other people or as miserable as he deserves to be.
