Soláň

is the name of one of those big green bumps in middle of Moravia. At only 861 meters above sea level it’s not the tallest of the bumps in the region. It is however known as the “Artist’s Peak”, from the collective of important Czech and Moravian artists of the 20th Century who met at a pub in the area. Some of their work can be seen in galleries nearby. These days the area also has an interesting collection of wood sculptures placed along trails through the village and surrounding mountain meadows and woodlands.

There’s our friend Pavel with fuzzy little Finn by the bell tower that also serves as a shop and tourist info center— along with a gallery of the art of several of the more prominent artists from the area.

We drove to a parking lot at the edge of the village at the top of the mountain and, after a visit to the info center, set out on one of the trails.

The climate is perfect for growing giant marshmallows— um, it’s fresh hay, wrapped in plastic to turn it into silage.

Bonus point for spotting the hare in this photo

The trail featured these lovely metal information panels featuring local folklore and the history of the area— all in the local dialect! It was quite a fun challenge for my imperfect Czech skills to muddle through this old Moravian text.

We set out on a shorter trail and managed to find a sculpture hiding under a wood shingle hat at this disused recreation area and hotel

Tonight’s my last night in another part of the Czech Republic with a different group of friends, so I won’t be around to reply much at first, but I’ll get around to it eventually. Next week I’ll hopefully have Part II of my remarkable day full of art in the Beskydy Mountains. There was a bit too much to cram into the one diary.

Word is that Michelewln’s new computer is expected to arrive this weekend. I suspect she’ll still need the computer guys to help her get it up and running-- and hopefully manage to transfer her old files from the dead beast.

Thanks for stopping by.

This is an open thread.
