Salaman Rushdie Stabbed at Chautauqua Institute [1]

This morning author Salaman Rushdie was scheduled to speak about the US as an asylum for artists and writers at Chautauqua Institute, in Chautauqua NY. As he was being introduced, an audience member jumped up onto the stage and stabbed him in the neck, and possibly the abdomen. According to local news he was airlifted to Buffalo where he is undergoing surgery.

Hadi Matar, 24, of New Jersey has been identified as the assailant who was taken into custody at the scene, according to NY State Police. That is all the information they are willing to give me at this time.

Mr. Rushdie is still under a Fatwa issued more than 30 years ago by the Ayatollah Khomeini. At this point no one knows if that has anything at all to do with the attack, though people, as usual, are speculating.
