Hello folks! I don’t know where this week went to. I had good intentions to present you with a brand spankin’ new diary today but between the day lost getting new tires and control arms on my van and the afternoon lost trying (and failing) to fix my dishwasher that has decided not to drain, I did not get said new diary written. I decided that I would point you back to a couple of early diaries on some very basic topics since we’ve recently had a few new members join up that wouldn’t have seen them the first time around.
The first one I would like to point you back to is the second diary I did for Kos Diabetes Group. The topic is Food Plans. I think that having a food plan is very helpful for diabetics. It makes you think about what you are actually eating. Although the diary is about the food plan I follow, there are other types of food plans that would work equally well for diabetics. The important thing is to choose one you can stick with.
Another one worth checking out would be the one on nutrition labels. It really does pay to read and understand what they are telling you. There are so many foods that are marketed as “healthy” or “diabetic friendly” that really are not the best choices you could make. Knowing how to read and interpret the nutrition label can help you make better choices.
The third one that I think is worth a read for anyone new to diabetes (either because of your own diagnosis or that of a loved one) is the diary about working with a nutritionist. Not all nutritionists are created equal. I have talked with some really excellent ones and some that I felt knew less than me. It’s really a crap shoot which you get. You can ask other people you know or your doctor for a recommendation which may help you to find a better one. An hour or so spent with a knowledgeable nutritionist can give you the information you need to re-shape your eating habits for the better.
I will be out of town next week and I’m not sure if there will be a diary or not. I would like to come up with something special for the first week of September which will be the Kos Diabetes Group two year anniversary.
