Which Way Are We Really Heading?

Sure enough, last week's numbers apparently were too good to be true, though much of the confusion over the past month or so as to where Covid trends are currently headed can be chalked up to the increasingly irregular reporting habits of far too many nations during this third pandemic summer.

Powered by the largest weekly death toll in the US since early April, the global weekly death toll has likewise surged to its highest level in 4 months; and while the global weekly caseload of new infections would seem to have fallen by a significant amount this week, this is more likely an artifact of the huge upward revisions in last week’s numbers. We’ve actually been averaging about 1 million new cases per week over the past month, so perhaps we’ll have a clearer picture of where we may be headed when I finish compiling the next update in my Circles of Hell series this coming Monday.
