I can distinguish high pitched notes. I can discriminate between low rumblings. I can sense if multiple sounds simultaneously overlap.
Random sounds do not startle me. Loud? I might not blink. A hum, patience serves. Thunder and lightning are as much like white noise as wind blown downpours or gentle rain. If sleeping, I sleep.
The last few years I have taken to keeping a ticking clock, bedside. Functionally it lets me know if I am asleep, or near consciousness. Essentially, I don't have to wake up to know if I'm not asleep.
There was a time when a "ticking clock" might have been impossible to endure -- trains...gentle reassurance. Right outside, roll over...
Two horns with two pauses –When the train is about to run through a railway crossing, this signal is used to alert the passersby as to the same. (three long blasts!)
If you're reading, might I ask -- do you have a favorite ticking clock?
