While Facebook and Twitter continue to amplify climate disinformation, LinkedIn seems to be making some effort to deny climate deniers' the chance to propagate climate disinformation.
Most recently, the professional social network has apparently banned the CO2 Coalition's members, and the group itself. Which makes sense! Given that the group was revealed in a Greenpeace sting as being a front group for fossil fuel money to fund climate disinformation, there's no reason to believe anything they say, but even if you didn't know that, you'd still have to be pretty stupid to buy what they're selling.
Enter Kevin Mooney. You may remember him as the Republican operative who calls himself an investigative journalist as he turns front group press releases into " news ", even at times lying about content being "exclusive" when it wasn't , and running hypocritical pieces attacking the left for NGO CEO salaries in an outlet belonging to an NGO whose CEO made much more than those attacked.
He was happy to take up CO2Coalition's complaint campaign, with a piece yesterday in the dedicated disinfo outlet RealClearEnergy.
In it, he repeats the exact sort of blatant climate denial disinformation that every social media platform should see fit to remove. He starts with what LinkedIn got the Coalition for: a post claiming that there's been a "dangerous 140-million-year decline in CO2." Dangerous for car-sized mosquitoes, perhaps, but pretty irrelevant to anything happening on a human timescale, like, you know, the development of agriculture and cities.
Apparently, per Mooney's regurgitation of the CO2 Coalition, the Inflation Reduction Act "is predicated on the false idea that human CO2 emissions are responsible for fueling dangerous levels of global warming."
Except of course that's not a false idea, but Mooney continues anyway with the claim that " natural influences are largely, if not entirely, responsible for recent warming trends" which again can be rebutted by anyone with an elementary understanding of greenhouse gasses.
Going further, Mooney claims that "the relatively modest levels of warming that have been experienced recently have been a boon to human civilization while cooling periods have had the opposite effect."
Oh, so there IS warming, but it's not human-caused (despite the millions of tons of heat-trapping chemicals we've pumped into the atmosphere) and is actually good, because the Dark Ages happened when it was kinda cold and the Bronze Age when it was warm. Real solid stuff here.
Keep it in mind though, as Republicans try to court suburban women voters who would rather not try and scrape out a Bronze Age-esque living in a flooded world of supersized pests.
