Biden’s Leadership Is Reaping Dividends [1]

2022 has been a tough year for President Joe Biden. From Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to rising inflation and a weakening economy, the president has faced crisis after crisis throughout the year. His poll numbers have taken a hit, and there have been murmurings about him not running in 2024. Yet, with less than 90 days left to the midterms, the president was able to usher through two of the most consequential bills in the history of the United States. These bills remind Americans why they voted for Joe Biden and show the immense level-headedness and wisdom of his administration.
Bipartisan Gun Safety Bill
In the wake of a series of mass shootings in the United States, Congress passed a bipartisan bill on gun control. The Protecting Americans from Gun Violence Act of 2022 is the most important gun control bill that Congress has passed in decades. Prior to it, nobody believed that it was possible to get Republicans to back gun reform. Some commentators argued that given the central role of guns in Republican identity, gun reform was impossible. Not for President Biden.
The bill restricts access to guns for domestic violence offenders, young buyers, and anyone thought to be a risk to the community. The era of a do-nothing approach to gun reform is over.
Bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act of 2022
Congress has also passed the bipartisan Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America Act, better known as the Chips and Science Act of 2022 . At a time when the world has wrestled with a semiconductor shortage, and China has accelerated its plans to invade Taiwan, home of the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, TSMC, the CHIPS and Science Act aims at making the United States a major semiconductor producer.
The act will see $52 billion invested into semiconductor research and other areas of scientific research, in order to combat the threat posed by China. The bill has already triggered a wave of investment. Micron, for instance, has announced a $40 billion investment in chip manufacturing, which will create 40,000 new jobs.
Biden’s Wisdom
The secret to Biden’s success has been his wisdom. We saw it in the election. The man who is famous for his gaffes, mastered the ability to stay in the background, biding his time. His discipline, which nobody expected of him, has extended to his Administration.
He realized that if he took ownership of the process, that moment of egoism would trigger a wave of Republican defections from the process of negotiating these bills. So, he stepped back, and let Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer take the lead. This was leading from the back by design. He knew, from the moment he said, “This is my bill”, none of these bills would see the light of day.
