On July 31 Bill Russell died, but he will live on in childhood memory:

I was just 9 years old when, on December 11, 1954, my mother took me to see my first live basketball game at the old UCLA Men's Gym. We sat in the very first row at one end of the court, virtually underneath the backboard, so close that as two of the greatest players ever to play on their respective teams - the Bruins' Willie Naulls, and the Dons' Bill Russell - fought for the rebounds, we could almost reach out and touch them. That game, a 47 to 40 victory for UCLA, was the last time USF lost before going on to 47 straight wins and two national championships.

It was also the game that turned me into a lifelong fan of UCLA -- and of the intense beauty of college basketball.
