Clip from Silke Bigalke, Der Kreml greift gnadenlos durch [The Kremlin is mercilessly cracking down], Tages-Anzeiger, August 9, 2022, behind paywall:
While the Kremlin continues to seal off the country, its lists of "unfriendly countries" and "undesirable organizations" growing longer and longer, it spreads its own propaganda almost undisturbed. The news site "Meduza," which moved its editorial office to Latvia years ago for security purposes, recently reported on two new propaganda brochures.
In them, the Kremlin gives the state media instructions for their Ukraine coverage: they are supposed to draw parallels between Putin's "special operation" and the Christianization of Rus" in 988 by Vladimir the Great, who had all the inhabitants of Kiev baptized. The second brochure is about the Battle of the Neva in 1240, when Russia's national hero Alexander Nevsky defeated the Swedes.
Far-fetched? "Meduza" summarizes the brochures: Russians, the message goes, have had to defend themselves for centuries against a godless West that wants to destroy Russia and annex its resources. There was a time when such brochures would have provoked audible ridicule even in Russia; now everything remains silent.
