A couple library branches off to the east will be open late today to help locals with the heat.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Evidence has been found that the shipwreck survivor story of the origins of the Chincoteague ponies might not be a myth after all. This is the evidence for the origins of the Chincoteague ponies. I decided to do both stories since I so rarely see the same story from both ends.

Japanese medieval times tables. Eighth century. They think it was to help bureaucrats figure taxes quickly considering where it was found.
The spectacular comeback of American farmers’ markets.
Archaeologists working for the Air Force have found 88 human footprints apparently more than 12,000 years old.
iNaturalist. Interesting app. I’m not likely to use it, but I can appreciate it.

My stepfather died last Sunday. I found out when I checked my emails on Wednesday. Not exactly unexpected, since he was 93; but that he was apparently recovering from COVID was a surprise. My mother and I have both stayed home from the wedding, but she said I shouldn’t try to come visit — I wonder what is going on down there.

I have been wanting Popeye’s chicken for months now. Things have been rearranged at our rental company’s office and I have to take the rent checks in now. I also needed laundry money and one branch of my bank is very close to a Popeye’s location.
On Wednesday, I waited till midday to turn the rent in; at my bank, I ended up waiting what felt like forever behind a woman who had just had a problem with the ATM and a man who seemed to be making deposits for four or five different businesses, just to get a roll of quarters; when I got to the Popeye’s, the line for the drive-through was so long, it wasn’t possible to get into the lot to park, so I found a spot a couple blocks down the street and spent $30 on 16 pieces all dark meat, half mild, half spicy — a little of it was the tip; but I only had $30 cash on me and didn’t want to use one of my cards.

The offspring had tickets for a Penn and Teller show, which I only saw when I looked at more than the flight itinerary that my daughter sent me. One of the pictures posted on Facebook was the three of them in their seats for the show.
My only plans were to take myself out to eat on Saturday. I had a Dungeon Burger (won’t feel a need to eat beef again for at least a year) with fries and a When Coconut Met Coffee stout at the Barley Mill Pub. I like stout, and I’m not going to regret trying a new one. I’m also not going to get this one again.
I checked a few days ago: School here starts up again on the 30th.

I stole this from Robert Reich when I was checking for wedding news on Facebook yesterday:
As William Allen White, the famed progressive editor of the Emporia (Kansas) Gazette in the first half of the twentieth century, once wrote: "Democracy is an experiment, and the right of the majority to rule is no more inherent than the right of the minority to rule; and unless the majority represents sane, righteous, unselfish public sentiment, it has no inherent right." (White also wrote: “My advice to the women of America is to raise more hell and fewer dahlias.”)
