Reportedly, hunters in Southeast Asia have devised a “monkey trap”, utilized to capture the creatures. It is a jar or coconut shell with an opening just large enough to admit an empty monkey paw. The bait is a banana or other food item placed inside the container — large enough that when grasped, the monkey cannot withdraw its paw while still clutching the food. The monkey is effectively rendered helpless because it cannot let go of its “treasure”, despite the consequences.

Note that when human beings reach a certain level of wealth-status, many become unable to let go of any amount of their accumulated treasure — despite the consequence for the country or planet.



Evolutionary theory holds that apes and the human species had descended from a common ape-like ancestor. Perhaps this is one inherited, shared trait?
