Friends of Lexington Avenue
Tell the City of Asheville and Duke Energy NO LAND SWAP. Duke says it can rebuild a new improved substation to meet future energy demand at its current location.
The City of Asheville and Duke Energy are actively discussing a new substation project which would alter the unique greenscape and character of historic Lexington Avenue. Moving the substation puts over 60 small businesses, over 1000 residents and a valuable 11,000 square foot urban forest canopy at risk. Duke’s nearly 3-story substation would impact 10 city blocks on historic Lexington Avenue, turning tree views into a grim, gray landscape and creating a giant concrete canvas for graffiti. Together we can stop this.
The following side by side comparison to show the current Lexington Avenue urban tree canopy that’s under threat by Duke Energy’s plans for a new substation. Together we can stop the substation land swap! Get Involved Sign the Petition Show up on 8/11

A motion filed in two Western North Carolina lawsuits against HCA Healthcare and Mission Health suggests Madison County will be the fourth WNC entity in less than a year to sue the hospital giant.
Embedded in the Aug. 4 motion — filed jointly in two lawsuits — are two references to Madison County, which has not made any official announcement or legal action against the hospital as of the day of the filing.
The 17-page motion proposes Buncombe and Asheville's lawsuit merge with Brevard's, given their many similarities, and mentions Madison in two paragraphs.
"The Parties also recognize that another county entity (Madison County) intends to bring the same claims on behalf of the same proposed class, and thus would be included as part of the Plaintiffs’ proposed Consolidated Complaint," the motion stated.
Later in the motion, attorneys suggest a single, consolidated lawsuit that includes Buncombe, Asheville, Brevard and Madison County be filed by Aug. 19.

Two class-action lawsuits filed against HCA Healthcare, which is Mission Hospital's parent company, may be merging into one.
Attorneys filed a motion in both cases Thursday aiming to consolidate the anti-trust cases.
Last week, Asheville City Council and Buncombe County commissioners filed a joint lawsuit against HCA, arguing the hospital group has a monopoly on health care in Western North Carolina.
The city of Brevard has filed a similar suit. The attorneys are asking to consolidate the lawsuits by Aug. 19.
