Will you be building sandcastles on the beach just outside of Raleigh, NC? Currently the beach is about 150 miles East.
I’m not the science fiction writer around here, I’ll leave that to Mark Sumner. Nor am I an environmental expert. So forgive me if I venture into a little hyperbole.
Raleigh currently sits at an elevation of 315 ft. Morehead City at 16 ft. and Wilmington at 36 ft. 100 years from now will Morehead City be covered by the sea? and if so, how much? Wilmington only has 20 ft. on Morehead City, what are the odds that it’ll survive if Morehead City is gone?
Goldsboro, NC current elevation is only 108 ft. It might very well be the new coastline. Downtown to downtown, Raleigh to Goldsboro is roughly 50 miles. In 100 years could the ice melts of Greenland and Antarctica be so severe that North Carolina’s shoreline moves inland 100 miles?
The closest I’ve ever lived to the beach was in Savannah, GA., but with a current of elevation of 49 ft. it would be underwater as well.
Things are moving faster than anyone originally ventured. Geographically speaking, are we moving at warp speed?
And we haven’t even started speculating on how that much coastline change will affect the population. I’ve seen models, but I’m not totally sure how high they’ve projected ocean levels rising. Nothing as fast as we’re seeing. But what they have projected, is devastating.
Dystopia anyone?
