The massive victory for abortion rights in Kansas yesterday took some pundits by surprise. Just a couple of weeks ago, 538 said it was “going to be close,” and CNN called the results a “thunderclap.” The anti-choice forces gave themselves all the structural advantages they could muster: an off-year election, during a primary where the only major competitive races were Republican. Turnout was massive, and came down almost 60-40 for choice.
One point the corporate media can’t seem to get clear on: progressive causes are popular, and when people are allowed to have their voices heard, views that get dismissed as “liberal” or even “radical” are right smack in the mainstream.
