City Reflections

In the 70s I worked in San Francisco, and was pretty familiar with the layout of the city. Yesterday, as some of you know, we drove there to visit Kossack kimoconnor. Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge we encountered the usual summer fog and drizzle. Tourists were walking the bridge, wearing shorts and t shirts, and freezing. We followed our familiar route to Kim’s house, saw her amazing garden, and noticed a change on her street. Along the sidewalks were beautiful plantings, under trees. This was the result of city funding and encouragement, which her neighbors, and indeed other neighborhoods, had embraced.

I had asked Kim to find us a “groovy” place for lunch, and so she did. This was Delancey Street Restaurant, right next to The Bay. Kim directed me as we drove via a circuitous route. Now according to repubs, cities are mostly burning, crime-ridden hellholes, especially on the coasts. Au contraire; I saw clean streets, new buildings, throngs of especially young people, new cars (mostly Teslas), and no sign of homeless, at least on our route. Near our destination at the Embarcadero was a downtown of beautiful buildings rivaling New York. (Well, I’m pretty much a S.F fan).

The fog cleared and we had a wonderful lunch, people-watching, with a view of the Bay beyond. The restaurant’s outdoor dining area wisely is surrounded with a glass partition to cut the wind.

The white plate in the center is our shared latkes. I had “Kamala’s Crab Cakes”.l suspect she has eaten there.

After lunch we crossed the street and watched the bay, and the flow of hundreds and hundreds of Giants fans toward nearby Giants Stadium, mostly wearing Giants regalia. I saw one Cubs blanket. (Giants won 5-4). Many of the fans were being carried on 3-person rickshaws, pedaled by young entrepreneurs. Behind us a train came by every 10 minutes. It runs the length of the Embarcadero and San Francisco's segment of the Bay Trail, along pre-existing track used by the F Market & Wharves historic streetcar.

A city that works. Not perfect by any means, but so desirable a place to live.
