for David Leonardo Chavez Castañeda at San Miguel de Allende

Give a kid a crayon and see what he draws.

His hand isn’t steady; his lines aren’t so fine,

drawing a cow on a white spackled wall.

When he’s a man, put a brush in his hand.

Watch what he does with sienna, blue,

yellow, red, and green. See

the women weaving wreathes

and the landowner-politicians

with their ammunition.

Look!

The townsmen stand and pray.

Hand him a pen and white paper. Witness

what he has to say. His lines reverberate

with each measure. Smell the powder. Hear

the shouting at the wall.
