Brandy Macumber and Tamara Bane are “two Iowa girls who met on a volleyball court” and quickly bonded over their shared interest: laughing giddily at damn near everything. They’re the kind of friends who spend most of their time cracking each other up over the tiny, goofy details of life.
Seriously, these women take wackiness to near-militant levels. Here’s a small example: twoiowagirls cracking up in the CVS.
For the last four years, Macumber and Bane have spent their vacations together road-tripping through the US, camping out, poking around and finding more things to goof on. The picture above is from their Facebook page, You Can’t Be Serious? (@twoiowagirls), showing them trying to get the statues at the Grant Wood “American Gothic” house to crack a smile.
On this year’s trip, they came up with a new, fun hobby: Each day of their trip, they solicited donations from their friends, family and followers and, each evening, they go out to eat add the day’s donations to their server’s tip. It’s fun! It’s a goof! A panic!
It’s beautiful.
Their vacay lark garnered more attention than expected, not only on Facebook but on various local radio and TV stations. Each day, donations increased until, on the sixth and last day of their trip, they had $2500 in the day’s kitty.
Their waitress, Jasmine Call, started her shift worried. Her boyfriend had been in an accident and couldn’t work. She didn’t know if they could make the month’s bills. Looking over the house, the night didn’t seem to promising for tips. Meanwhile, at one of her two-tops, Bane and Macumber were getting psyched.
“Us sitting there eating dinner getting ready to do this. We’re like lots of deep breaths, we’re okay, it’s okay, just because we’re so excited to be able to do that for somebody,” Bane said.
And do that they did. Call was shocked to find the twoiowagirls had left her an $810 tip. They took the remainder of the day’s haul and split it among the rest of the restaurant’s workers, about $150 each. You can see video and tear up here. Bonus teary video here.
Bane and Macumber have both worked in the service industry and know how tentative the tipped existence can be. Using their “BFF road trip” to lighten the load for some people along the way seemed a natural way to help.
