According to the display:
“Structures in Montana, especially in the 1850s, were not made out of adobe. This form of construction, using clay, sand, straw, and manure to create un-baked bricks is extremely rare in Montana. Most examples of adobe construction are seen in the desert Southwest part of the United States in New Mexico and Arizona.”
At Fort Owen, work on replacing the wooden structures with adobe began in 1852. Without constant upkeep and maintenance, the adobe structures deteriorated. Today, only one of the two barracks buildings remains. The barracks provided living quarters, kitchen, storage for trade goods, and trading space.
