In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books…still looking for a novel to read in addition to the two diaries I am already reading (probably an Octavia Butler novel).

I am reading:

End of a Berlin Diary : 1944-1947 by William L. Shirer - I am reading Shirer’s entry of November 14, 1945 very slowly (and it’s a long entry) and I shall have to probably to reread it. On this day, Shirer records the existence of the “fourteen hundred tons” of secret archives that formed a large part of the documentary basis of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich; he includes a number of documents in this day’s entry.

Among the things I learned:

1) Hitler was so obsessed with plans to invade the Soviet Union even in 1940 that “Operation Sea Lion”— the Battle of Britain— “is all but forgotten” in spite of the heavy air bombardment that Britain continued to be subjected to.

2) “The unexpected resistance of Yugoslavia to being swallowed up by the Germans postpones the date [of the commencement of Operation Barbarossa--the code word for the invasion of the USSR...CK] by five weeks- the documents make plain— and probably thereby saves Russia.”

3) A General Franz Halder, a man that Shirer calls “the greatest German strategist of the war” says in a document drawn up after the cessation of hostilities that:

“The interference of Hitler that had the most decisive influence on the Russian campaign was the official order of the Supreme Command for the ‘Battle of Kiev’ ”

This i need to look into in (much) more detail but Shirer’s implication is that this “second-rate undertaking” by Hitler, while it “revived Hitler’s confidence” meant that Hitler also “never did recognize the importance of Moscow as a military nerve center of the Russians.”

Just. Wow.

I need to read more about that. And this General Halder. Who was whitewashing some of what the Germans did; probably to save himself from being put in jail. Decorated by by both Hitler and President John F. Kennedy.

Just...I need a military or a WWII historian if there are any that read WAYR? I have some questions...
