A trend I have been seeing is since the Roe reversal, some Republicans are starting to realize that in order to retain their socially conservative base, they will have to adopt Keynesian philosophies. It likely won’t work.

Republicans have hidden behind cultural issues for eons, largely getting away with it because their voters consistently voted against their own economic interests. Recently, some of these culture warriors have had an epiphany.

Somebody has to pay for these babies they want carried to term, no exceptions.

The House Ways and Means Committee passed its version of inflation relief Tuesday that would send a $225 check to eligible Hoosiers. Indiana residents who were not required to file tax returns with the state in 2021 can sign an affidavit in order to claim their $225 return. That was a sticking point for members of the Indiana Department of Revenue. They said that could include anywhere from 300,000 to 800,000 additional Hoosiers and require a massive effort to verify each affidavit.

Republicans are coming together, in Indiana, to give “free money” to its residents. Let us now take a look at the current House Ways and Means committee makeup.

The bill, HB 1001 , includes a number of tax exemptions for dependent or adopted children. It also expands Medicaid coverage to include labor and delivery services for people likely to qualify. The proposals come as the Senate is moving forward with new abortion restrictions. Specifically, the bill would allow providers to file claims for mothers who are “presumptively eligible” for Medicaid coverage for labor and delivery but are not currently enrolled. Sponsors say this stipulation would help eliminate financial barriers for low-income parents.

Keeping count, this committee is 16 R, 8 D. Overall the Indiana House is 71 R, 29 D. But when the people come complaining about the situation, they decided that conservative policies were not going to help. There really are no conservative policies that do anything. As we know the Republicans have two basic economic philosophies:

1. Give as much money to their rich friends as they can.

2. Help their rich friends keep it.

Given this reality, and the rapidly approaching midterms that will acknowledge the would-be Emperors have no economic clothes, they decided to co-opt liberal policies in an effort to keep their base happy. Republicans all over this country are finding out, and the polls are telling them, that many of their voters have little use left for them.

Sharon Negele, the Attica Republican who co-authored the bill, is particularly concerned about funding for mothers, to which Ed Delaney, a Democrat from Indianapolis who launched a perfectly targeted verbal arrow:

“If this state thinks that having babies is the issue then we oughta pay for it,” he said. “Especially in an environment where apparently we’re going to order people to have babies.”

Expect more of this to happen nationwide, as Republicans realize the only thing they will be good to voters for, is co-opting Democratic ideology.

It will be fun to watch rural areas turn blue again.
