COLLATERAL DAMAGE [1]

I wanted to fax my congressman, Lloyd Smucker, to urge him to vote in the interests of the American people for a change, this time for House Resolution 1302, to consider regulation of assault-style weaponry. I was too late to send that request before the vote. Not unexpectedly, Smucker voted against it. So I sent the following letter to the editor of the York Daily Record:

COLLATERAL DAMAGE — We've seen it in places like Afghanistan, where bombers hit a wedding procession or outdoor gathering by mistake because it was thought to be a gathering of enemy forces or because a terrorist leader and his fighters were close to a group of civilians.

We are also seeing it here in America. But in our case, it is not misdirected targeting by soldiers, but deaths of children, teachers, and others as a consequence of the firearms lobby contributions to our legislators. Every dollar our congressman's, senator's, or state legislator's campaign collects from that lobby brings innocent civilians into the line of fire. It happened in Uvalde, in Buffalo, in Parkland, in Newtown, even in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, among too many other places.

Every shooting murder of a child, a teacher, a parent, a church attendee, and other innocent civilians, is the collateral damage of the contributions given to politicians by the firearms lobby, and yet another splotch of blood on the hands (and soul) of the politician who accepts the tainted money.

My congressman has voted against the House bill to regulate assault weapons; two hundred thirty-seven thousand dollars can buy a lot of thoughts and prayers, but can't buy back a single life.
