So I have some personal changes coming, as a result of which I've been going through some stuff to see if I still want it.
In the course of that, I came across a reference to a bill, which was summarized as follows:
Sec. 1 The Congress finds that
(a) It is a fundamental principle of American law to recognize and affirm the intrinsic value of all human life;
(b) Unborn children who are subject to abortion are living members of the human species;
(c) There is an urgent need to bring the Federal Government into compliance with the principle of the intrinsic value of all human life, regarding all matters reflecting the lives of unborn children. Sec. 2 (Would forbid federal spending, training, and insurance coverage related to abortion.) Sec. 3 (Would allow anyone to start a civil action on their own behalf or on behalf of unborn children against anyone who is alleged to be in violation of any part of Sec. 2.) Sec. 4 (Would allow expedited Supreme Court consideration if any state enacts legislation prohibiting or restricting abortion which is overturned by any court.)
Sound familiar, especially Sec. 3, with the deliberately-intimidating Texas-style "anyone can sue anyone" language?
Remember how when Texas did that, there was all that talk about the "novel legal strategy?"
The above-summarized bill was introduced into the Senate by the late Mark Hatfield - in 1982.
Apparently there is some truth to that old saying about the newness of things under the Sun. And a reminder that no matter how outlandish it (whatever it is) may seem now, don’t think it’s going away on its own.
