This is written primarily in reaction to the speech delivered yesterday in DC by the Caligula Citrouille.

First, a short walk down memory lane. I joined DK in October 2003. I think I’m amongst the first hundred or so users. At the time I also contributed to Billmon's and the late Steve Gilliard's blogs. There may be some here who still remember them.

My wife and I saw the writing on the wall, first with the egregious Clinton impeachment, then the stolen election in Florida, and the last straw was the Iraq war and all the lies surrounding it. We decided to leave the US (Los Angeles) after the second GWB victory in November 04, and two months later, moved to the South of France.

At the time I posted that the US was turning into a horrible hybrid of Brazil and Russia. We never regretted it since, though we thought the US had managed to stop its slide during/because of Obama, but the very vocal birther movement (which I fought online tooth and nail) gave me pause. But with Trump, the process accelerated and IMHO has become irreversible. Fascism and civil war of one kind or another are the all too likely prospects.

Obama was like Marcus Aurelius, the last reasonable emperor, and now it's going to be like the last decades of the Roman Empire. Most of this (though not Trump) was predictable AND predicted as far as 2003 when I joined here. But you can't stop history. The media are fickle, when not complicit, and useless. The Courts… Well, Vichy, Chile etc teach us that the Courts will rubber stamp all the excesses of any fascist regime. Trump's backers are correct: replace about 100 persons in Washington, and true democracy will fall for good. In effect, the US is ALREADY a singer-party regime: the Dems; the rest are lunatics.

As resources become scarcer, climate more fierce, the few “circuit breakers” that remain will melt. If the last decade is a useful predictor of what lies ahead, in ever more stressful circumstances, the US is screwed. Trump himself may not be back, but his replacements — De Santis or another like him — will be even more dangerous. I wish I still had some hope left, but I don't.
